CONSISTENT MARE EP • Captures Featured Barney Ross Claiming Event at Aurora. » Proves Too Fast for Kieva and Capt. Nadi Under Able Guidance of Jockey Parke. AURORA, 111., May 21.— W. F. Blacks , speedy and consistent seven-year-old mare, ! Ep, captured the Barney Ross claiming event, sixth on the program, which served as the headline attraction at the Fox Valley Jockey Clubs course this afternoon. Kieva was a length behind the winner at the finish and three lengths in advance of Capt. Nadi. Backed into favoritism in the field of seven starters, Ep never left the result in doubt at any stage of the six furlongs journey, which the daughter of Epinard — Hey Presto traversed in 1:12 Vs. Little "Chuck" Parke was astride Ep, and his alertness af. the starting gate enabled him to get Ep away in front. Capt. Nadi and Kieva made attempts to catch the flying leader, but it was in vain. Though Kieva got within striking distance of Ep during the stretch struggle, the chestnut racer from the C. E. Davison stable was unequal to the task of overhauling Ep. It was Parkes second victory of the day and put the Idaho youngster at the head of the jockey list at Aurora with a total of fourteen triumphs, and also put him in the thick : of the fight for the top rank in the Ameri-can riders standings. j Claiming races embraced the entire card of eight events here, with the Barney Ross, j | the sixth event on the card and a six-furlong ! sprint, serving as the feature attraction. Seven named in the overnight entries accepted, providing a well balanced race. Five of the races were given over to horses suited for the dashes, and, despite the fact that members of the plater division performed op all occasions, a good brand of sport was presented. Summer-like weather prevailed and the track was lightning fast. There was a large turnout of spectators at the Fox Valley course to view the days sport. Under strong handling from "Chuck" Parke, Elanac scored in the opening race on the program, a dash of five and a half furlongs which brought a field of ten contestants. Julia Grant, the favorite, finished ■econd and Rubans Choice dropped into j j third place. Coming through on the rail at the stretch turn, Elanac overhauled the early I lenders and assumed a clear margin, but had I to be hustled during the final stages of the mce in order to ward off the stretch bid of Julia Grant. The winner was somewhat overlooked in the betting and paid 1.40 for straight wagers. Another outsider scored when Trevallion came from behind with a good burst of speed to annex the major portion of the I purse in the second race, at six furlongs, j I Koley Bey was second, a length behind the ! winner, while Chancabit was a tiring third. Chancabit set the pace for most of the sprint, but gave way to the challenge of Koley Bey when straightened away for the wire. Trevallion, which was in sixth position a furlong from the finish, challenged the leaders and overhauled them, rewarding his supporters with 8.60 for straight tickets. A close and thrilling finish resulted in the third, another sprint affair, in which Snorky took the decision over Old Nick, with Hour j j I Zev landing the show end of it. Snorky, always close up, disposed of Jockana on | I ! reaching the last quarter of the six furlongs | ! event, and taking what, appeared to be a | safe lead, showed the way to his vivals in the stretch. However. Old Nick charged after the leader and reduced the margin I separating him from the front with every ! stride. Form players connected for the first time during the afternoon when the consistent j I I six-year-old mare Cornelia Powell kept her | winning streak intact, bringing it to three j j for the meeting in as many starts. Edgar. Boy finished second, a neck behind the win-ner, while Ricciardo drew up in ihird place. i Only six met over the mile and seventy yards route. Restrained off the early pace | set by Bank Me, Cornelia Powell drew into ! command when ready and had sufficient in reserve to hold off the challenge of ,dgar j Boy in the closing stages. I The fifth resulted in a nose finish with ! Cheerus, a recent winner, getting up in time to be adjudged the winner over Polyphote. j j Linden Tree was third in the field of seven i S starters. The strong handling that Cheerus received from jockey Joe OMalley was largely responsible for the success of the chestnut filly, as the veteran reinsman fairly lifted the daughter of Stimulus — Lady Consul across the wire in advance of Polyphote, which had displaced Rickey Roo as the leader during the last furlong of the dash.
