THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 NO SIR, bay gelding, by Sortie Fib, by Westy Hogan; owned and trained by Miss Mary Hirsch, daughter of the well-known turfman, Max Hirsch. He is not rated among the top notch three-year-olds, but may furnish a decided surprise before the season is far advanced. He is training at Churchill Downs-and is reported in fine condition. By NOBRIS BOYDEN A No Sir, bay gelding by Sortie Fib, by Westy Hogan, owned and trained by Miss Mary Hirsch, probably will not develop into the best three-year-old of the season, but he should make plenty of trouble for the leaders. He already has come -within a few inches of winning one of the important tests, the Flamingo Stakes. In eleven starts as a juvenile, No Sir, scored two victories and was only unplaced twice, while finishing second four times and third once. One of his triumphs -was in the Cast View Stakes at Empire City and the other over Fompoon in an overnight handicap for lady owners at Saratoga,, the latter being leased out for the occasion. Already this year he has won the Bahama Handicap, as well as taking second honors in the Flamingo. After going unplaced in his first two starts, which were at Belmont Park last spring. No Sir was claimed by Miss Hirsch for ,750 when he came out again in mid-July at Empire City. Under the colors of Mrs. G. D. Widener, he ran second to Rainland in a dash of five furlongs. Miss Hirsch whipped him right back in the East "View, in which he came from behind in the stretch after being -well up from the start of the five and three-quarter furlongs event, to triumph by a half length over the speedy filly, Juliet V. No Sir made his next appearance in the Saratoga Sales Stakes, at five and one-half furlongs, iri which he made up ground on Maedic in the final furlong to run second, losing by a length and a half. In the Sanford the Hirsch gelding had to fight his way forward in the stretch, but managed to take fourth place, about two and a half lengths back of Maedic as Third Count was second and Privileged third. A muddy track prevailed for the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, but No Sir moved up nicely in the stretch, only to tire and finish fourth, although only three lengths back of Maedic, -with Traulovc second and Grand Play third. Sent against Pompoon in his final outing at Saratoga, No Sir outgamed the J. H. Louchhcim star in the stretch to take the victory by a half length. He covered the five and one-half furlongs in 1:054. fastest time of the meeting for the distance, but with 116 pounds up he was in receipt of fourteen pounds from Pompoon, which also was making his first start since June. Miss Hirsch had to put away the leading member of her modest stable for a couple of months and No Sir did not compete again until an overnight dash of six furlongs at Pimlico in November, in which he held on well to "be third back of Prairie Dog and Uneasy. Off this effort, the Sortie gelding gave Brooklyn a terrific battle in the Walden Handicap, losing by a length while finishing ahead of Yellow Tulip, Night Bud, Clodion and others. After a rest of two months No Sir began his -winter campaign In the Hialeah Stakes, a dash of six furlongs, in which he was in early difficulties and closed very fast in the stretch to lose by less than two lengths, although finishing sixth. He then was nosed out by Rainland in an overnight event, but only because his rider could not prevent him from lugging in. No Sir came back to take the Bahama Handicap, in which he had up top -weight of 118 pounds, by a half length over Eli Yale, with Sceneshifter third and Bernard F. fourth, covering the seven furlongs in 1:234. He was unable to give Dellor ten pounds in an overnight event at a mile and one furlong and -was beaten two and a half lengths in the time of 1:4934 while finishing ahead of Eli Yale and Court Scandal. In the Flamingo, No Sir worked his way forward steadily to get up to the front in the stretch, but inside the furlong post Court Scandal came up on the outside to beat him by a head in the 0,000 race, while behind him were most of the other good three-year-olds shown in Florida. A good part of No Sirs pedigree is not considered fashionable today, but there is no getting away from its ruggedness. Sortie was a good race horse himself and traces to Domino through a strong although not prolific branch. Westy Hogan, No Sirs maternal grandsire, was a hardy campaigner, while his second dam. Hyperbole, was something of a race mare as well as being by Jack Atkin, from a daughter of Voter.
