Vanderbilt Pair Most Troublesome for Winner in ,000 Added Maryland Stake Weather Clear. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 12. Improving considerably over his winning score in the Severn Handicap at Bowie, on Friday, which marked his first outing of the season. Aneroid, from the J. A. Manfuso stable, scored a convincing victory under 115 pounds when he administered defeat to nine high ranking sprinters to account for the twenty-fifth running of the ,000 addedHar-ford Handicap, that served as the bright and particular attraction as the spring meeting of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association began under ideal conditions at Havre de Grace today. With an impost that was five pounds lighter than In his previous essay, the four-year-old son of The Porter and Outburst enriched the coffers of his owners to the extent of ,075 and achieved hi3 first major success of the year in rather easy fashion, when he drove to the finish under the energetic handling of jockey C. Rosengarten, to take the measure of Speed to Spare and Postage Due, a pair that performed in the livery of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt stable. Howard Bruces Jay Jay, favorite and winner of the same event last spring, was in fourth position before Whopper, Log, Dark Hope, Billy Bee, War Emblem and Higher Cloud, the only others that met after five others were withdrawn. WELL-BALANCED CARD. Conditions could hardly have been im-proved upon for this period of the season prevailed for the introduction of the spring meeting of fourteen days at the course on the banks of the Susquehanna and a largo crowd was out for the entertainment which was the best that could be produced so early. Seven well-balanced races comprised the program, with the Harford instrumental in luring the big assemblage to the track. The Harford was listed fifth, and a good start was obtained, with Speed to Spare showing his usual high turn of speed to move into the command. Postage Due a stablemate, gave chase to the rangy son of Balko, while Log, early sensation of the Florida season, raced in third position and Aneroid was just before Jay Jay, who was on the outside and following close up. War Emblem was trailing the field with Dark Hope and Billy Bee and it was apparent that they would not come into the contention. Speed to Spare was still on the head end coming into the home stretch, but he was beginning to feel the effects of setting the pace, and L. Knapp went to a hard drive when he noticed Aneroid moving up on the outside. ANEROID IN STRIDE. The Vanderbilt colt rallied willingly to the whip, but Aneroid was in full stride to race past, after which he drew to the finish to have two lengths to spare, timed in 1:12. Ten juveniles, of which three were making their first start, met in the four and a half furlongs race which ushered In the sport, and It saw one of the three first-outers graduating when Royal Rhapsody heavily supported choice from the J. Racing into the lead shortly after the start, the son of Royal Minstrel led for the distance to reach the line four lengths in advance of Mrs. M. N. Bonds Hunting Home, while Frank Brooke, a member of the Mrs. K. N. Gilpin barn was third. Making his first eastern appearance Miney Mycrson, veteran Amberjack gelding of the L. E. Ogle stable, which proved a useful performer during the winter months, added another triumph to his successes when he defeated six other betterrthan-average sprinters in the second race. Ruling second choice in the speculation and nicely handled by R. Eccard, he made all of the running to register at the immediate expense of G. H. Marl-mans Bill Donoghue, which gained the bulk of support, while third was landed by J. B. Belks Scudder, with Gay Dog before the others. PATSEY BEGONE SCORES. Patsey Begone, racing for J. J. Meehan and making her first start since her Florida campaign, was a front running victor of the six furlongs third race in which eight better-class platers were engaged. Away fastest of the field, Patsey Begone was hustled into the lead at once by jockey Peters and when clear was placed under steadying restraint as she raced before Aroused and Little Argo, which were closely lapped. Through the stretch Little Argo was asked for his best and he drew closer to the leader, but his effort was a futile one as Patsey Begone continued to hold sway. Aroused was- also placed under punishment in the final furlong and, responding well, was able to dislodge Little Argo from the place award by a head but could not overcome the advantage of one length held by the winner. Honey Cloud, consistent three-year-old sprinter of the E. K. Bryson Stable, chalked up his second successive score and his fifth of the season when he turned in a front-running and popular victory in the fourth race, in which nine were under colors. In a race entirely for three-year-olds, several of which are nominees for the Preakness, the Bryson gelding was good enough under the expert handling of jockey H. Richards to set a swift pace and withstand a long tedious I drive to land his honors in a hard fought ! finish. The son of High Cloud, after shaking j off Mary Keen, his most dangerous opponent after a half mile, was forced to give his ! best energy and stamina in the final test to j reach the close a head before A. G. Vander-bilts Sharp Shooter.
