6 RUN TEXAS DERBY SATURDAY Mars Stars Top Weight in 5,000 Added Race at Arlington. Reaping Reward and Case Ace to Carry 123 Founds Case Ace Doubtful Starter. Heelfly Holds Prestige. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 12. Milky Way Farms Reaping Reward and Case Ace will carry top impost of 123 pounds each in Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 added Texas Derby. These sparkling colts are among the seven named by Mrs. Ethel V. Mars for the nine furlongs race, and their brilliant two-year-old record is the cause of them being called upon to concede weight to the twenty-two others that are eligible for the richest fixture to be offered during the" Lone Star State spring season. Case Ace, which disappointed in the Blue Bonnet Handicap Saturday, is none the worse for his six furlongs sprint, but trainer Robert McGarvey has not decided whether he will be sent after Saturdays prize. McGarvey has been going along slowly with the son of Teddy and he might not ask him to take part in such a gruelling test. In addition to the Kentucky Derby, Case Ace is eligible to the Withers and it may be that he will be reserved for that important fixture of Belmont Park racing. It is a different story with Reaping Reward. After a good rest, after his sparkling victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last fall, the son of Sickle was "legged" up at Milky Way Farm in Tennessee. Since arriving at Arlington Downs, he has taken kindly to his preparation and his recent nine furlongs work was the best ever shown by a Texas Derby eligible that had not enjoyed winter racing. He comes by his impost through virtue of his victories in the New England Futurity and Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. FORMIDABLE OPPONENTS. In the event McGarvey decides to save Reaping Reward for the Kentucky Derby, he still can send forth formidable contenders in Nations Taste, Mars Shield, Military and Jaw Breaker. Mars Shield demonstrated Saturday that she is capable of holding her own with any kind of company when, after a brilliant nine furlongs work on Friday, she was beaten only by inches by Robert L. and triumphed over Three Ds Stock Farms Heelfly. With her sex allowance. Mars Shield will carry 115 pounds. Although defeated, Heelfly lost none of his prestige with trainer John R. Pryce. Pryce instructed jockey "Buddy" Haas not to press the colt and it was the first time the colt Continued on tiventieth page. RUN TEXAS DERBY SATURDAY Continued from first page. had been called upon to go a distance farther than six and one-half furlongs in competition. He stumbled slightly at the start and was rushed into the lead, and this no doubt took a great deal out of him. Pryce predicts a different story on Saturday. Heel-fly will carry 120 pounds, the same weight as Robert L., which won his first race of the year when he accounted for the Trial Purse. Robert L. has always shown a preference for the local course and, by coming from behind to grab the major honor, the nine furlongs should well suit him. J. R. Gregory is well pleased with the condition of Dead Calm for he has fully recovered from a light cough, which prevented him from being under colors in the Trial Purse. Like the other colts and geldings, maidens excepted, he will carry 120 pounds. Fully satisfied with Eastports race, J. G. Brown, trainer of the Arkansas Derby winner, stated this morning that the son of Swift and Sure would fill his engagement and that Gallant Eagle probably would accompany him. TRACK DECIDING FACTOR. Track conditions alone will decide whether My Tommie will carry R. B. Georges Glad Acres Farm colors. In the event the track turns muddy, the son of Torchilla will be under silks, but trainer Jack Hodglns- probably will reserve him for future engagements in case of a fast track. Although they showed little in the Trial Purse, Brown Prodigy and Palan are still considered starters. Tom Marshall, who trains the pair, intends sending them through stiff preparations Wednesday, and whether they will be among the field will depend on their trials. With the race fast approaching its decision, owners and trainers are scouting around for the best riders. George Woolf will be astride Heelfly. Alfred Robertson will handle one of the Milky Way representatives, and George McCamey was so pleased with Warren Cornays handling of Robert L. that the colt will again be entrusted to him. Officials in charge of the Texas Jockey Club are now completing plans for a gala day Saturday when Derby Day climaxes the weeks racing at the Waggoner plant. In addition to the 5,000 added Texas Derby, numerous other events are being planned for the big day.
