GALSUN IN FAST WORKOUT Calumet Farm Derby Candidate Gallops One Mile in 1:40. Gosum Refuses to Extend Himself in Kcene-land Trial Galsun rieases Trainer Kearns. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 12.; A large number of railbirds were treated to the most impressive trial of the spring here by a Kentucky Derby candidate this morning when Calumet Farms Galsun went a mile over the Keeneland course in 1:40., Gosum, another Derby hopeful from Warren Wrights stable, attempted to go with the big chestnut son of Gallant Fox and Sunstroke, but he refused to extend himself and was timed the distance in 1:48. Weather and track conditions could hardly be improved; upon. Wishing to give the two colts experience on a regular race track, trainer Frank Kearns vanned them from nearby Calumet Farm, where they had undergone all their previous preparation. The word had been passed around that the pair would be worked at Keeneland and many horsemen arranged their schedules so as to be present. Galsun, which has been the medium of a strong play in the Derby future books, with his odds dropping from as high as 60 to 1 to 15 and 12 to 1, was equipped with blinkers for the first time this spring. Gosum also wore blinkers. Irving Anderson, Calumets contract jockey, was astride the big colt. After a leasurely gallop around the course, the two colts broke into speed approaching the mile post on the mile and one-sixteenth track. Galsun, on the inside, broke slightly ahead of his mate, but they were together going around the lower turn, with the first quarter being run in :23. IMPRESSIVE MOVE. Anderson took a better hold on Galsun and he settled down to a more even pace, yet the colt forged away from Gosum, to be timed the half mile in :49. The latter was tabbed in :493s. Galsun was caught the three-quarters in 1:15 and then Anderson permitted him to step the last quarter in :25, to finish out the mile journey In 1:40, handily. Eased up gradually, Galsun went out nine furlongs in 1:53. Gosum finished far back of him. Trainer Kearns was highly pleased with Galsuns performance, but said he was not definitely committed to starting the colt during the Keeneland meeting, prior to the running of the Blue Grass Stakes. He was disappointed in Gosums effort,-as the son of Hotweed had gone right along; with Galsun in their trials together at the farm, and the colt probably will be asked to race on the. opening, days program Saturday, The only other Derby colt asked for speed was J. W. Parrishs Dclior, which went three furlongs in :36, in company with Proph. The Midwestern banker and sportsman was present for the trials of his two colts, it being the first time he has seen them since last fall.
