DETROIT READY FOR INAUGURAL Business Conditions Indicate Successful Session SessionOpening Opening Friday With Charity Day Program DETROIT Mich May 25 With thoroughbreds arriving from all sections of the country and nominations for the Inaugural Handicap six furlongs sprint that tops the opening program of the regular Detroit sea ¬ son Saturday and the Col Alger Memorial Handicap the piece de resis ¬ tance for the Decoration Day card having filled quite satisfactory to rac ¬ ing secretary Webb Everett judge Joseph A Murphy and president and general manager Clarence E Lehr it appears that the fourth annual meet ¬ ing of the Detroit Racing Association which will be preceded by a day of racing for the Horsemen Relief Society on Friday will be the best in the short historv of the Fair Grounds course There was a lot of worrv around the country caused by the several labor disputes during the winter but a quick survey about town reveals that every one is back at work md mdhappy happy Naturally that means there is a great chance for Detroiters to have time to consider the thoroughbreds The Detroit officials are tickled pink over the fine array of horses on the grounds and those expected to reach the course for which stalls have been bedded down downNot Not since the long summer meeting of 1934 when the elite of the racing world had members of their stables quartered at the Motor City course have the performers had such excellent credentials That was the year Cavalcade won the Detroit Derby and al ¬ though there is no Derby this year president Lehr has a notable successor in the Frontier Handicap For three decades the Devonshire management put on the stakes for stars of the handicap ranks and the best of the day made the trip to the Dominion in an attempt to win the fixture Several great ones found the journey a losing venture but with few exceptions those that were successful had wonderful backgrounds backgroundsATTRACTIVE ATTRACTIVE OFFERINGS OFFERINGSThat That is the highlight of the thirtynine day session but there are twelve other stakes four of which carry 5000 in added money that will tempt some of the stars quartered at Latonia and Washington Park and there is a chance that some easterner might decide to load a handicap horse and a twoyearold for shipment here The Moslem Temple Stakes will be run on Wednesday before the Frontier and 15000 in added money is not to be overlooked overlookedIn In addition to twelve carloads of horses Continued on thirty second page DETROIT READY READYFOR FOR INAUGURAL Continued from first page which unloaded Monday Clyde Van Dusen who trains for the locally owned Dixiana stable brought thirtysix head this morning D A Headley nephew of H P Headley is due late this afternoon or early tomorrow with a division of his uncles stable Young Headley was very successful here last spring and with Preeminent Whopper and others in his charge he expects to duplicate his achievement achievementOFFICIAL OFFICIAL FAMILY COMPLETE COMPLETEWith With the arrival of secretary Everett from California the official family is about com ¬ plete Eddie Thomas one of Americas lead ¬ ing starters checked in several days ago and he is holding busy sessions at the gate each morning He informed horsemen if it was necessary he would hold schooling classes each afternoon until the opening Thomas did this prior to the opening of the Santa Anita meeting and he had all of the young ¬ sters barrierwise when the Arcadia meet ¬ ing began beganBetween Between directing the racing here and at Thistle Down and River Downs judge Mur ¬ phy is finding time to lend a hand in getting Hawthorne ready for its meeting although it does not get under way until early in September Sunday with Edward Strong judge Murphy visited River Downs where all traces of the devastating flood are being erased He stated that new barns are being built along with the other improvements and that by midsummer the plant will be ready for a meeting meetingPOWERS POWERS CAMERA IMPROVED IMPROVEDSince Since the close of the fall meeting design ¬ ers of the Powers Camera which met with so much approval here and at River Downs and Thistle Down have made several im ¬ provements There is expected to be little delay in getting the picture to the placing judges and also as many pictures as needed will be available for them themThursday Thursday morning Edward Fry newly appointed racing commissioner will meet with the Detroit stewards and Frank Mc ¬ Donnell the commission steward and all applications for licenses will be passed upon Commissioner Fry said there will be changes lin the policy of his department and that he I and judge Murphy and his associates would do all possible to offer the patrons the best racing possible v A v
