NEWEST SGIENfiflC GADGET 100 Trainers Using Magnetic Ther ¬ apy to Treat Leg Ailments ElectroMagnaDiathermy Invades the Thor ¬ oughbred World Case of Crystal Prince Chief Example Science seems to be invading all fields of endeavor and enterprise It has changed racing in many ways being manifest of late years chiefly in the introduction of the starting gates totalizators cameraized fin ¬ ishes and use of the invisible infrared ray in connection with automatic electric timing timingThese These innovations are plainly apparent to the casual race goer from his seat in the grandstand But now science is invading the stables and is in process of revolution ¬ izing ageold practices in the training and conditioning of thoroughbreds that part of of the sport which takes place in the morn ¬ ing hours and which Mr Racing Fan seldom sees and knows little about aboutQUICK QUICK EFFECT EFFECTThe The newest wrinkle is the application of ElectroMagnaDiathermy to effect quick healing of injuries and at the same time tonic the blood stream through ionization of cells by means of a magnetic flux The combination of the two in a much improved form was applied to the thoroughbreds for the first time at Santa Anita more or less through an accident and with remarkable curative results resultsIt It all came about in this way B R Charles a scientist who spent most of his life he is in his sixties but looks under fifty in radium research laboratories seek ¬ ing safe and sure ways and means of con troling Madame Curies discoveries in the treatment of disease turned his attention some years ago to an intensive study of electrical treatment with the same object in view That Charles has a deep knowledge of electrical science is attested by the fact that he has designed electrical apparatus j apparatusj for the United States Government hospital service and that he was called upon by Col j Colj Charles A Lindberg to make electrcially heated flying suits for the famous birdman and his wife which the Colonel and Mrs Lindberg wore in their historic flight to the Orient via Alaska and the Bering Straits StraitsRESEARCH RESEARCH WORKER WORKERPrior Prior to the innovations in the recent de ¬ velopments for horses Charles had been re ¬ tired from active service and was conducting special research and experimental work in a secluded laboratory on the historic old Santa Anita Rancho Then came the first racing season of the Los Angeles Turf Club at Santa Anita and J B Partridge prominent horse owner and trainer hearing of Charles curative work for humans sought his advice for his wellknown racer Crystal Prince The horse had displayed high class in his younger days but had dropped to the low claiming ranks because of chronic leg ail ¬ ments and generally weak underpinning underpinningThe The results of forty years of electromedi ¬ cal research and practice for humans was immediately put into operation for the bene ¬ fit of the horse Charles reasoned that phys ¬ ical science for horses was of as much im ¬ portance to horsemen as physical science for humans and his years of past successes gave him an immediate undertanding of the needs of the animal animalCRYSTAL CRYSTAL PRINCE CASE CASEWithin Within two weeks after that casual chat Crystal Prince won a race He came out of it nodding and the assembled trainers r marked He was good for only one race now Partridge will have to lay him up for another two months But not so Within a few days Crystal Prince was again entered and won handily but again he came back to the judges limping This was repeated again and again until he entered the winning circle eleven times moving up in class at each per ¬ formance and the entire training contingent was wondering how the former cripple could snap out of his lameness so quickly It had become noised abou the stable that Crystal Prince had been seen wearing a new kind of boot The entire truth finally came out The MagnaDiatherm boots Charles had provided to encase the horses legs had done the trick It is now history that they enabled him to run in exactly fifty races in 1935 and 1936 and win eighteen purses finish second eleven times and third eight tunes for total earnings of 17975 After every race Crystal Prince wore the electric boots from four to five hours The boots contain several miles of diamond drawn copper wire of almost microscopic fineness spirally arranged in a continuous coil the whole setting up healthgiving rays activating the circulation while heating and healing internally as well the inducted en ¬ ergy penetrating muscle and bone giving the ionization effect which worked the miracle Scientist Charles had tried out on a horse his newest laboratory creation de ¬ signed for human use and it had clicked clickedELECTRIC ELECTRIC BLANKET BLANKETOther Other trainers began to seek out this quiet sequestered man requesting his advice about their ailing horses Charles was particularly interested in revivifying and rebuilding run ¬ down thoroughbreds that were giving way to the rigors of competition on the race course Dull dispirited racers intrigued this man who had for half a century pondered ways and means of invigorating his fellow men And so he designed an equine electric blanket which acts on the horse as his electroradiating blankets act for humans and which helps transform sluggish also rans into faststepping winners He has devised a throttle hood made for relieving certain ailments of the head and upper throat and a shoulder and chest device that will also act as a general tonic for the en ¬ tire physical system systemSTANDARD STANDARD EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENTAll All of which has made the new electro ¬ magnetic gadgets standard equipment in over a hundred of the leading American rac ¬ ing establishments today Among those who have gone in for the apparatus are Bob Mc Garvey of Milky Way Farm J H Stotler trainer of the A G Vanderbilt string Hirsch Jacobs leading American trainer of the last three years A A Baroni Earl Beez ley Clyde Phillips L T Whitehill A G Pelleted A B Spreckels J W Marchbank and Maj A C Taylor TaylorWhen When Santa Anita closed and the stables scattered to other racing sectors the news spread of the new treatment and Scientist Charles is now back in his laboratory work ¬ ing day and night back at work in spite of his efforts to retire
