CHARITY PROGRAM OPENS DETROIT MEETING TODAY Thirteen Stakes Headed by 10000 Handicap on Regular Schedule Slow Footing Certain to Prevail Because of Recent Heavy Rains Six Named for Horsemens Relief DETROIT Mich May 27 Detroit the home of the automobile turns to the thoroughbred for a thirtynine day period with the opening of the Fair Grounds season tomorrow The initial offering will be for the benefit of the Horsemens Relief Society and the regular season gets under way Saturday with the running of the 3000 added Inaugural Handicap and seven supporting races Due to heavy rains during the night and early this morning there is no hope for anything better than a slow track for the Relief Society program but if favored with no more moisture the course should be in its best condition for Saturdays offering It is the fourth annual season for the Motor City since the sport was legalized in 1933 and with many of the leading stables of the country stabled here or en route Clarence E Lehr president and gen ¬ eral manager and his associates pre ¬ dict the best season in the short history of the sport With most of the labor troubles settled or being ironed out Detroit has re ¬ turned to its prosperous condition Hotel rooms and apartments are at a premium which augurs well for the splendid condition of the city cityBRILLIANT BRILLIANT STAKES PROGRAM PROGRAMA A brilliant stakes program consisting of i thirteen features and topped by the 10000 added Frontier Handicap whch will suc ¬ ceed the Detroit Derby abandoned after its 1936 renewal was the incentive for attract ¬ ing many of the more fashionable establish ¬ ments Then again Detroit has a working agreement with Thistle Down and River Downs and from the start of tomorrows card until River Downs conies to a close about November 1 owners who will swing around the circuit will have about 140 rac ¬ ing days The minimum purse will be 800 and daily there will be a feature carrying no less than a 1000 purse The first book of conditions which covers a sevenday period is well sprinkled with handicaps and allowance races and with many crack performers on the grounds racing secretary Webb Everett should experience no trouble in providing a feature daily dailyDECORATION DECORATION DAY FEATURE FEATUREFollowing Following the Inaugural Handicap on Saturday will be the Col Alger Memorial Handicap for Decoration Day It is endowed with 5000 added money and is one of the four stakes carrying that rich prize Next Saturday will witness the running of the St Glair Stakes and the Belle Isle Handicap and the following Saturday the Pontchar train Stakes will be decided Then comes the Wolverine Handicap a preparatory race for the Frontier Handicap on the following Saturday but on Wednesday before the run runIning of the of the piece de resistance will be Ining the 5000 added Moslem Temple Stakes for i twoyearolds That week will be the gala Continued on nineteenth page CHARITY PROGRAM OPENS DETROIT MEETING TODAY Continued from first page one for Detroit The Shrine will hold its annual convention at that time and Presi ¬ dent Lehr is arranging to entertain the largest crowd in the history of the course ATTRACTIVE HANDICAPS HANDICAPSThe The Michigan Handicap on the following Saturday the Liberty Handicap and the Woodward Stakes on Monday following July 4 and the Ontario and Windsor Handicaps which will be offered on closing day July 10 bring the stakes program to a close Among the leading stables on the grounds or having reservations are Bomar Stable Hal Price Headley Charles T Fisher Fred M Alger Jr T D Buhl I J Collins John Anhut Oddesa Farm Mrs E H Bartlett Senator Mike Casey James Collins L A Moseley George Burke C Le Roy King R Robertson Mrs M M Johr L J Lepper H R Wilkin Mrs A J Abel Sam T Games J Carter R R Greenlee W D Covingtonj Keene Daingerfield Jr J Van Winkle P L Kelley Hyman Friedberg E W Duffy O F Woodward Mrs B Franzheim C S Howard and others othersSince Since the close of the fall meeting the plant has been completely renovated and painted paintedAll All starts will be made from the Bahr gate and the Powers camera will be used to decide all close finishes The Daily Double will be used on the first and second numbers of a daily eightrace program which will get under way at 230 oclock Eastern Standard Time
