Here and There on the Turf Dawn Play Won Acorn Pleas ¬ ingly inglyMust Must Give Weight in Coaching Club Oaks OaksSeven Seven May Start in Belmont BelmontWar War Admiral Tries Out Dis ¬ tance Dawn Play may not rule favorite in the Coaching Club American Oaks the princi ¬ pal event in the country for threeyearold fillies when it is renewed at Belmont Park Wednesday but her victory in the Acorn Stakes was gained in very pleasing fashion Lester Balaski had the big brown daughter of Clock Tower and Gun Play close to the early pace right from the start taking ad ¬ vantage of her post position near the out ¬ side and she moved up steadily under strong handling through the final quarter to take the lead a few strides before the finish but drawing away quickly when she did so Dawn Play added 10100 to the treasury of the King Ranch by her triumph in the Acorn an event in which the Texasowned stable gained third honors behind Blue Sheen and High Fleet with Split Second last year yearBy By virtue of her Acorn triumph Dawn Play will be compelled to take up scale weight of 121 pounds in the Coaching Club American Stakes but the additional three furlongs over the mile distance of Wednes ¬ days victory should be to her liking as she has indicated a fondness for going a route Drawbridge finished very fast in the Acorn after being in close quarters making the turn and she probably would have taken second honors from Royal Raiment in an ¬ other stride The Wheatley Stable filly may be expected to receive very strong support Continued on thirtyfifth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page in the Oaks by virtue of her Acorn perform ¬ ance as she was giving six pounds to the winner and will be getting eight pounds next week However Dawn Play was under mild urging in keeping up in the Acorn and she may be under a stronger hold in the early stages of the Oaks which should prove bene ¬ ficial ficialThese These two fillies among the Oaks candi ¬ dates competing in the Acorn came through with the most impressive efforts Mana tella the Foxcatcher Farms daughter of The Satrap and Boadicea raced in second posi ¬ tion until reaching the stretch after which she weakened and dropped back to fourth place at the end She was making her first start since the winter and the effort should do her much good but she probably will re ¬ quire more conditioning to be ready for the mile and three furlongs of next Wednes ¬ days race Royal Raiment weakened sud ¬ denly in the final few yards of the Acorn and the Oaks distance may be beyond her but she can be considered a likely starter Mr Bones from the same stable and also by Royal Minstrel weakened in the Withers but under better rating almost beat Gran ville in the Belmont Stakes last season Sweet Desire winner of the Pimlico Oaks for the Bomar Stable and C V Whitneys Peplum both were coming on at the end of the Acorn and must be considered for the Coaching Club American Oaks Seven starters are indicated for next Saturdays running of the Belmont Stakes with War Admiral continuing in the role of favoritism as may be expected from his un ¬ beaten record for the year including Ken ¬ tucky Derby and Preakness victories and the splendid manner in which he has trained since the Pimlico triumph In his latest workout the son of Man o War and Brush Up was sent over the mile and onehalf dis ¬ tance of the Belmont in 236 finishing easily He was admirably rated with the slowest quarter which happened to be the first being covered in 26 and the fastest in 25 That effort will get Glen Riddles mighty atom accustomed to the Belmont distance and he still has time for another trial of any character trainer George Con way may desire War Admiral also has been a mile in 148 and a mile and three furlongs ia 222 since the Preakness In contrast to the manner in which War Admiral has been training since the Preak ¬ ness Pompoon was not asked for speed un ¬ til Tuesday and then went six furlongs in 117 Jerome Louchheims star suffered a caulk bruise just before the Pimlico race and trainer Cyrus Field Clarke took matters easy with him last week However the son of Pompey and Oonagh has had plenty of prior seasoning and Clarke may consider that he has time enough to have his charge in complete fitness for the Belmont Of the other likely starters Sceneshifter Melodist Mosawtre and Flying Scot all have raced re ¬ cently Brooklyn has been working steadily but he will not be a starter In the Suburban Handicap Monday as indicated here yester ¬ day trainer H J Thompson haying decided to forego the event although he may select an overnight race to givethe Blue Larkspur i colt seasoning of that sort for the BelmOnt
