DEATH TAKES BERT MICHELL Coldstream Farm Trainer Dies at Louisville Victim of Heart Disease Gained Fame as Conditioner of Reigh Count Countand and Anita Peabody Scores Big Success SuccessWith With Mrs Denemarks Stable LOUISVILLE 111 Oct 21 The colorful career of Bert S Michell the man who con ¬ ditioned Rcigh Count for his 1928 Kentucky Derby victory came to a close last night as the Coldstream Farm trainer died at a local hospital Heart trouble from which he had been suffering for several years was the immediate cause of his death deathMichell Michell connected with the turf alter ¬ nately as trainer and owner was as widely known as any trainer in America He first gained fame as conditioner for John D Hertz principally through the exploits of Reigh Count and Anita Peabody Thanks to Michells expert handling the latter won the 1927 renewal of the Futurity at Belmont with Reigh Count second secondAfter After leaving the Hertz stable Michell took over the training of the pretentious string of Mrs Emil Denemark another Chi ¬ cago patron His success with this stable particularly in Florida was little short of phenomenal While in the Denemark em ¬ ploy he figured in an illegal stimulation case involving the filly All Around Although absolved of any knowledge of the alleged stimulating he was suspended for sixty days under a Florida rule holding trainers re ¬ sponsible for their horses horsesCAMPAIGNING CAMPAIGNING AT KEENELAND KEENELANDSince Since that Incident which was in the spring of 1937 he had been associated with the fashionable Coldstream Stud At the time of his death he had a small string cam ¬ paigning at Keeneland and to the end talked of plans to go to Lexington as soon as he recovered to break the yearlings yearlingsA A native of England Michell was 56 years old He came to this country at the age of 21 and immediately set out on a turf ca ¬ reer He raced horses on all the principal tracks of the United States Canada and England having taken Reigh Count abroad for an invasion as a fiveyearold fiveyearoldHe He also trained horses for Al Sabath A former resident of Louisville Michell of late had made Miami his residence Sur viving him are his wife Mrs Alice Jane Michell four sons and three daughters daughtersFuneral Funeral services await the arrival of the widow
