PLAYMAY WINS BROOKFIELD PURSE AT CICERO FINAL WEEK OF MEETING Another Big Crowd Turns Out for Good Monday Program Our David Deprived of Purse After AfterWinning Winning Recently Again Takes Takesthe the First Place Award CICERO 111 Oct 24 Taking an early lead and never being headed thereafter W Whitebrooks Playmay raced home in front of five other useful platers in the Brookfield Purse which served as todays feature at Sportsmans Park The race was decided over a mile and seventy yards and in covering the distance on a fast track in 150 the fiveyearold daughter of Mere Play won by a length and onehalf at odds of a little more than 4 to 1 It was the second start in successive racing days for the White brook mare for on Saturday she competed unsuccessfully in a race over a shorter dis ¬ tance and in more select company Second companySecond to complete the distance of the Brookfield Purse was Bull Market with What a Pal running third and Lady Fitz fourth Watercure and Short Skirt rounded out the field fieldBoth Both Watercure and What a Pal made strenuous efforts to take the lead away from Playmay over the early furlongs and then In the final quarter Bull Market made the bid that landed him second money Under jockey William Page Playmay stuck to her guns after having set all her own pace and although she was ridden out it was apparent that she could have gone still farther and still maintained her speed speedLARGE LARGE ATTENDANCE ATTENDANCETodays Todays program ushered in the last full week of racing at Sportsmans Park and it attracted another large gathering The weather was splendid and this along with the good card was responsible for the good turnout turnoutThe The first race produced a surprise victory for Nelson Holtens Vonnie which turned back nine other sprinting platers over five furlongs With L Wilson at the reins the veteran Tryster gelding took the lead after about threesixteenths and then held his ad ¬ vantage to the end Katherine G finished second and Musical Jack third with the more favored Bald Eagle and Alma Mae far back The mutuel return on the winner was 4720 for 2 2Butterman Butterman started the five furlongs sec ¬ ond race as if he might make a runaway of the affair but after showing the way to the last eighth by a comfortable margin gave way and finished far back in the ruck The winner was W H Goelitzs Oak Park which Delpha Castille sent across the line of finish in front by two lengths Jockeb accounted for second honors with Jean Dale third thirdCHINA CHINA BOY SCORES SCORESChina China Boy owned by W W Gosselin of Aurora carried Jockey Castille to his second victory of the afternoon by capturing the third race It was decided over six and a half furlongs and coming from behind Continued on thirtyfourth page PLAYMAY WINS BROOKFIELD PURSE AT SPORTSMANS Continued from first page the Gosselin representative scored with four lengths to spare Miss Balko the favorite set the pace but weakened in the last eighth and finished fourth Copper Lad taking the place and Firm Hand finishing third thirdCastillo Castillo rode his third winner in the fourth race in which A D Allens Valdina was never headed over six and a half furlongs The fouryearold son of Bull Dog had a big lead much of the way and had enough left to complete the distance a length and a quarter in front of his nearest rival Attain ¬ ment The latter was always among the leaders and responded well to pressure in the drive but found it impossible to over ¬ take the steadygoing pacemaker Beaver County was best of the others in the field of ten tenL L Kings Our David whose last victory was taken from him because he failed to carry his correct weight never was headed in the sixth race in which eight met at seven furlongs He set the pace under good riding and then when put under pressure responded well to discourage the challenge of Wowo and win by a length and a quarter Between calls in the stretch Wowo got within a head of the King horse but then weakened and Our David handled by Earl Dew was able to draw out once more A dead heat resulted for third money Mount kala and Lady Thirteen finishing on even terms
