Here and There on the Turf i iBig Big Hurry Establishes Herself Is Black Helens Sister Jacola in Smart Distance Effort Johnstown Is Given Scare Add to the names of the illustrious two yearold fillies which have won the Selima Stakes that of Big Hurry brown daughter of Black Toney and La Troienne by Teddy whose sister Black Helen might have won the 1934 running of Laurels richest race had she been eligible Big Hurrys triumph in the thirteenth running of the mile race was not a surprise although her previous record had not placed her among the outstanding members of her division However she had shown enough in her two Laurel appearances to warrant creditable support against such outstanding fillies as Dinner Date Inscoelda Paper Plate and Donita M and finding the mile distance to her liking came through with her finest effort one that would make make her more illustrious sister feel proud Big Hurry may not have been the best candi ¬ date Edward R Bradley ever had for the Selima but she at least brought him his first victory victoryBig Big Hurry must have run a fine race in the Selima not just because she came from behind to defeat Dinner Date and then to stave off the challenge of Inscoelda but for running the mile over a slow track in 141 By comparison this is good time because Laurel is not accounted among the speed tracks of the country Now that she has stepped into prominence Big Hurry may continue in the public eye because it is very possible shes just found herself She pos ¬ sesses much more size and substance than Black Helen and therefore is better equipped for the longer races whereas the latter was small nimble and quick but with class enough to develop into a winner of the Fla ¬ mingo Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks the latter race over the exacting route of a mile and three furlongs Big Hurry is eligible to the New England Futurity Satur ¬ day and has earned the right to try for it itAnother Another splendid performance Saturday at Laurel was that of Jacola in the Maryland Continued on tMrtyfiJth pagej HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Handicap in which she made the course look fast in running the mile and onequarter in 204 just two and onefifth seconds off the mark held by Hourless A striking part of her sparkling effort was the last quarter which she did in 24 The Maryland was Jacolas fourth victory of the season in five starts her lone defeat occurring in the Ladies Handicap in which she had to be content with second honrs back of Idle Miss Immediately preceding her more recent suc ¬ cess the daughter of Jacopo and La France by Sir Gallahad III established a new Laurel record of 137 for the mile in cleverly defeating Seabiscuit The Chief and other fast horses so it was expected that she would be a strongly supported favorite in the Mary ¬ land Handicap in which she got three pounds from Nedayr one from Handcuff and gave weight to the others on the scale Jacola whose bad ankles must have needed the respite from competition she got from the Pimlico Futurity last fall until the middle of September is eligible to the 15000 Washington Handicap featuring the close of the Laurel meeting Saturday and she now must be considered its outstanding candi ¬ date More than probably her principal rival will be Esposa which has displaced Marica as the leading older member of her sex and the race may very well decide which is the best filly or mare in the country as Jacola seems to have stepped ahead of Handcuff among the threeyearold lassies Hypocrite Jolly Tar and Nedayr among her Maryland opponents probably will go against her again in the Washington along with Esposa and a few other veterans like Mr Canron and Aneroid Just as they had done trie previous Satur ¬ day Jacola and her halfbrother Johnstown put on a double act Johnstowns latest score came in the Breeders Futurity at Keeneland in which he was given some stern opposition In fact he would have suffered defeat had the race been a few feet longer as Allegro had him headed in the next stride The Dixiana gelding jockey Joe Rosen re ¬ ported wanted to sulk in the early stages in which he dropped back to sixth place after breaking in front but he was very anxious to run in the final quarter and after failing to find an opening on the inside or between horses was taken to the outside for his clos ¬ ing bid But Johnstown had made no mis ¬ takes as Jimmy Stout had him always within a length of the pace and on the outside and so he made the Breeders Futurity his fourth stakes victory and increased his earnings to 31420
