somewhat unexpected triumph over a brilliant field of steeplechase stars in the twentysixth running of the Meadow Brook Steeplechase Handicap The large number of local steeplechase enthusiasts present cheered the popular Bostwick to the echo as he rated the lightly burdened Sussex to the end of this about two and a half miles with two lengths showing before F Ambrose Claiks favored London Town Meadow Brook which developed into an exciting and spectacular contest from start to finish Of absorbing interest to those present was the return of Thomas Hitch cocks Annibal to action in this event for the first time since he came out of the Red Cross Special lame after defeating Ossabaw in that Belmont Park match a year ago Annibal however stood on his head and turned a somersault with King at the ninth fence styled the fatal fifth in contests over the about two miles route He was knocked out but later got to his feet Sa tilla Annibals running mate came a crop ¬ per with Scott at the eleventh hedge wiile Tarbrush was pulled up upMOST MOST NOTABLE SUCCESS Sussex was favored by the comparatively light impost of 138 pounds and added 4950 to earlier earnings whi j paying his backers at the lively rate of 1380 for 2 It was by far his most notable success racing through the field Like his illustrious stablemate Cottesmore he is a development of the veteran Thomas Hitchcock who bred never looked better than when snugging Sussex to the end of the Meadow Brook and there was much hand ¬ shaking and prolonged applause for him as he accepted the trophy from Henry Bull BullSussex Sussex was never far off the pace in the Meadow Brook Bostwick rating him nicely as Mad Policy cut out an even pace in the run the first time through the backf ield and down the front field in front of the stands London Town and Annibal were right with Sussex behind the pace when the field came to the ninth fence near the end of the front field where Annibal went down and in a minor miracle King escaped being trampled in the mixup as others of the field passed over him himWith With Annibal eliminated Sussex went to Mad Policy when straightening for the run through the backfield in the final lap of the course and Ossabaw also made his move All three were fairly close together there but Ossabaw dropped out of it under his 163 pounds in the run to the far turn while I MadPolicy also went limber and on the last turn Bellhouse asked the shortpriced Lon ¬ don Town for his best bestSwinging Swinging around the last turn it was a question of whether the gray Sussex not hitherto regarded as any great shakes of a hedge hopper could withstand the stout challenger But London Town swung very wide entering the front field and over the sixteenth and final fence and through the runin Bostwick appeared to be outfinishing the capable Bellhouse who was riding more loosely than the shorter stirruped Bostwick BostwickSussex Sussex instead of losing ground drew out a bit through the last yards to win by a pair of lengths Dollys Love who made his run as Ossabaw ran out of speed on the back field was a steady third though sound ¬ ly beaten by the first two Then followed Ossabaw and Mad Policy I INone None of those involved in the two falls appeared seriously injured The race was run in 444 which time was not far off Sydneys 439 course record recordGREAT GREAT STRETCH DRIVE DRIVEThe The Portland Handicap mile and onesix ¬ teenth event for those of class C produced a thrill when Conn McCreary after trailing along a distant last to the stretch brought R C Thatchers Flagscot up with a great rush on the outside to land him home win ¬ ner Ben Whitakers Mythical King raced to second place with Russia beating Shad ¬ I ows Pass the only other starter starterNick Nick Wall rushed Shadows Pass into a long lead from the start while McCreary at once took hold of Flagscot and he was soon galloping along five lengths back of the other three Arcaro was in second place with Mythical King and he made no move until the stretch was reached There he readily put Shadows Pass away and looked i a sure winner until McCreary made his sen ¬ sational winning dash on the outside in the final furlong The winner was the favorite returning 480
