LOU GEHRIG PASSES AWAY AWAYNEW NEW YORK N Y June 3 Lou Gehrig the iron man of baseball who played first base for the New York Yankees for fourteen years until illness forced his retirement in 1939 passed away last evening Gehrig who would have been 38 years of age on June 19 was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which is a hardening of the spinal cord which causes muscles to shrivel He wasted away gradually being twentyfive pounds underweight and barely able to speak when the end came In his playing days Gehrig was recognized as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen During his fourteen years in the junior circuit he played 2130 consecutive games and was chosen th most jaluable player in the league on t 1 lished various alltime records
