JOCKEY SHELBY CLARK Jockeys Community fund Shows Interest in Welfare ot Riders Desire to Have Shelby Clark Receive Best of Medical Care Example ExampleCRETE CRETE 111 June 3 Most of the prob ¬ lems that the officers of the Jockeys Com ¬ munity Fund and Guild have to handle are those concerning jockeys insurance and de ¬ tails pertaining to it Occasionally they get requests for assistance from riders but most of the time theyre trying to sell race tracks the idea that they should arrange for jockeys insurance Last week it was learned that the Jockeys Community Fund and Guild had voted to make a donation towards the funeral expenses of the late Ray Hight shoe despite the fact that he was not a member of the organization In that partic ¬ ular case the officers felt that they would make an exception in Hightshoes case be ¬ cause of the fact that Ralph Hightshoe Rays brother was a member and because heir organization was so comparatively new that they wanted to be sure that every rider had every chance to join and to im ¬ press upon all riders the necessity for them to protect themselves against just su i situ ¬ ations as the Hightshoe case caseThe The interest of the Jockeys Community Fund and Guild Jn the riders does not stop with seeing that they are protected by in ¬ surance The other day William Gillespie traveling representative and secretary for that organization passed through Chicago on his way to Detroit and New York with young Shelby Clark The Clark case offers an interesting example of how the Guild interests itself in the riders because Gilles ¬ pie was taking the young boy back to New York to see that he gets the best medical attention available availableARTHRITIS ARTHRITIS DEVELOPS IN ARM ARMShelby Shelby who was in the running in the race for the jockeys championship at the time with 140 winners injured his leg at Fairmount Park last September Despite the fact that he went to the doctor and took care of his injury it did not heal as it should Worse still an arm that had been injured before began to swell above the wrist and the swelling never went down Arthritis developed and for a time the boy was in pain and walked around with a stiff neck neckAt At the present time Clark has only a pe ¬ culiar swelling above his right wrist and a slight trce of a limp to show what he has gone through but he is still far from right Gillespie hopes that by consulting the best specialists in the East that the boy will be given treatment which will enable him to resume riding ridingYoung Young Clark who is 18 years old and hails from McLeansboro 111 was a good riding prospect a year ago before he met with the accident which put him on the ground Some idea of just what kind of a rider he was can be obtained from the fact that he rode his 140 winners between January 6 to Sep ¬ tember 20 20Despite Despite the fact that he has been on the ground eight months and has been unable to do any riding in that time Clark has only picked up ten pounds more than the eighty he weighed when he was active in the sad ¬ dle As he is still young enough and light enough to have a whole lot of riding left in him Clark deserved to get the best in medi ¬ cal care The Jockeys Community Fund and Guild through the good offices of Bill Gillespie is going to see that he gets it
