VICTOR BORSELL WINS ASTRIDE FIRST MOUNT MOUNTSpringfield Springfield Mass Boy Aboard HyCop at Hollywood Park for Successful Debut In Saddle SaddleINGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD Calif June 3 Wearing George Woolfs boots and Jackie Westropes pants because he had no tack of his own Victor Borsell 24 of ItalianAmerican ex ¬ traction on Saturday May 24 at Holly ¬ wood Park crashed the racing headlines when he won the only race he has ever rid ¬ den on any race track It was the fifth event of the afternoon and the horse he rode was named HyCop threeyearold son of Hygro and Karokop KarokopBorn Born in Springfield Mass twentyfour years ago Victor Borsell moved with his family to a little town near Belmont Park Elmont N Y where he began to take a consuming interest in the thoroughbreds Small of stature he weighs only 102 pounds today and with a likeable personality the wavy redhaired boy seven years ago was picked up by Matt Brady and began to learn the fundamentals fundamentalsWalking Walking hots and executing the numerous chores allotted to stable boys he finally became an exercise boy and apparently a good one oneALWAYS ALWAYS WITH GOOD STABLES STABLESAsked Asked how it occurred he had never be ¬ fore been given a mount in a race Borsell explained he had always been with big sta ¬ bles and they all had the best riders in the country countryI I finally went with Maxie Hirsch but left him last fall at Pimlico and went to Florida with Mr Finnegan and he brought me out here Borsell explained Mr Fin ¬ negan is W B Finnegan trainer of Hy Cop who gave Victor his first chance in a race raceThat That he is a talented rider was evidenced in the workmanlike manner in which he hustled HyCop to victory in his debut debutReplying Replying to the question as to when ha first realized he had a chance to win it Borsell smiled and said I was never sure we were going to win it I was scared to death HyCop would stop so I kept working on him with everything I had booting and pushing and whipping even inside the eighth pole that finish line looked a mile away he added addedHyCop HyCop is a horse with a lot of speed I had been working him in the mornings and knew he could really run but I also knew he could really stop on occasions I was as much surprised as he was when ha didnt stop today thats why I kept work ¬ ing on him I wanted to win that race mpra than I ever wanted anything in my life lifeBROKE BROKE EL CfflCO CfflCOBorsell Borsell incidentally is the boy that broka the sensationally fast El Chico at the Zieg ler ranch He also galloped Big Pebble in the latters preps for his march to victory in the Widener Challenge Cup at Hialeah Park last March MarchHe He was Dits exercise boy when the latter was DerbyBack being primed for the Kentucky Derby Back in the jocks room after his thrill ¬ ing dash to victory Borsell was being ac ¬ corded much backslapping congratulations and kindly banter from veterans like Jackia Westrope Georgie Woolf Charlie Corbett Ralph Neves and other members of the Hollywood Park riding corps corpsStill Still excited and obviously riding in the clouds over the wonderful experience that had come into his life Borsell chuckled After all how could I miss with Woolfs boots and Westropes pants that tack has been home in front so often I wanted to win for their sake too I knew they would get a bang out of it itEnthused Enthused and encouraged by his initial success Borsell will begin assembling tack of his own with which he hopes to boot many more horses to victory ere the present meeting has run its course
