SIRES AND DAMS By CHALLENGER Spa Sales Open Monday August 4 About 650 Yearlings to Be Offered Nine by Blenheim II Will Be Sold Mereworth Takes Kilmer Night Quite a few changes will be noted in the consignors when the Saratoga sales get under way on the night of Monday August 4 The usual large consignment from Court Manor the Virginia establishment of the late Willis Sharpe Kilmer will be missing and so will the annual crop of yearlings from Coldstream Stud Holly Beach Farm A S Hewitt and the Kentucky breeder W E Caskey Among the prominent newcomers is the Calumet Farm of Warren Wright breeder of Whirlaway Proud One and others now in the turf limelight This years sales open two months from today and although the FasigTipton Company has not announced the complete schedule as yet the sales will get under way on a Monday night rather than on a Tuesday as in former years The large consignment from the Mereworth Farm of Walter J Salmon will take over the night formerly devoted to the Court Manor sale while Henry H Knight will offer his Almahurst Farm babes on the night formerly occupied by W E Caskey As usual there will be many small consignments offering splendid youngsters A A Baldwin entleman rider and Virginia breeder will sell but two J M Roebling New Jersey breeder will sell one colt and two fillies by Case Ace while the veteran racing official Chris J Fitzgerald will offer a colt by Challenger II and two colts and one filly by Pharamond H The success of Whirlaway and Proud One has naturally directed attention to Blenheim II the imported stallion now standing at A B Hancocks Claiborne Stud in Kentucky At the moment there are only nine yearlings by Blenheim II to be offered and they are listed here with the names of their consignors FAIRHOLM STUD R A FAIRBAIRN fillies of more attractive breeding than the Blenheim II group listed above R A Fairbairn owner of Fairholm Stud in Kentucky and for many years one of the countrys most prominent breeders has again listed a small but select group Malvina B dam of the bay colt is also dam of the winners Stimulator Longford Prince Arthur and Special Agent the latter now a sire in California One Hour produced One Change Gay Monarch Split Second Magic Hour and the highpriced Gala Hour while Reigh Counts daughter Countess Time was also dam of Gallahadion winner of the 1940 renewal of the Kentucky Derby The A B Hancock group has all of the class associated with the products of his famous nursery Risk a daughter of Sir Gallahad III produced Sky Larking one of the famous juveniles a few years ago and a winner of five of his seven starts before an injury caused his being destroyed Harrie B Scott is selling eighteen in all and they will be listed in a later issue of this paper Calumet Farm will sell sixteen yearlings in all the majority being by the stallions Chance Play and Bostonian They too will be listed in a later issue but suffice it to say here one is a chestnut colt by Gallant Fox out of Some Pomp dam of Proud One Virginia breeders will be prominent as usual at this years sales A B Hancock will offer his Ellerslie Stud babes along with the Claiborne group on Hancock night which has come to be regarded as the most important night of the SRII vendues Morven Stud one of the most attractive farms in Virginia and the property of Whitney Stone member of The Jockey Club will sell sixteen yearlings in all nine Colts and seven fillies Seven of these offerings are by Pompey the stallion owned in partnership by Morven Stud and Ellerslie Stud Kenneth N Gilpin of Kentmore Farm and the importer of the great sire Teddy will sell two colts and one filly by Granville while Mrs George L Harrison of Blue Ridge Farm will sell seven one of which is a chestnut colt by Bold Venture Minnant the dam of Augury Mrs W Plunkett Stewart will offer seven all by her successful sire Milkman Colin McLeod the youthful master of Huntlands Farm near Middleburg will sell seven four by Belfonds and three by Pilate W H Lipscomb veteran consignor to the Spa sales will sell a bay colt by Quatre Bras II Cinema by Sweep dam of many winners including On Location LocationWith With Coldstream Stud absent from the consignors list this year Bull Dog yearlings will not be as plentiful as heretofore Charles A Asbury has two Bull Dog fillies in his group one a brown out of Misleading by Sweep and the other a brown out of Sweet Ora by Sweep In the group of ten to be sold by Charlton Clay there is a brown filly by Bull Dog Pomp and Glory by Man o War while Warner L Jones will sell a brown colt by Bull Dog out of Spur Flower Ariel the sire now standing at Mere worth Farm will be very popular this year with Spa buyers due to his splendid record last year with juvenile winners Besides the many in the Mereworth Stud consign ¬ ment and which will be listed in detail at a later date there will be a small group in the Greenwich Stud consignment of W B Miller They are a bay colt by Ariel Showy Lady by Display chestnut filly by Ariel Teco by Golden Guine a and a chest ¬ nut filly by Ariel High Continent by High Time No Man o Warcolts or fillies will be sold this year though Harrie B Scott manager of Faraway Farm will offer a splendid group by different sires out of attractive daughters of Big Red
