REFLECTIONS Bv CHALLENGER Hysterical Wins Red Cross Cap Big Pebble Goes Well After Rest Inglewood Handicap Draws Stars Whirlaway Makes Hall of Fame HOLLYWOOD Calif June 17 Two Ton Tony was hailed as something of a champion race horse when shipped here from Australia But the Mayer importation was anything but impressive when on Monday he led to the head of the stretch and then flattened out to allow Ship Biscuit Vain Bo and Aethelwold to pass him in the rim to the wire He did not impress us as a threat in any race attracting high grade horses Ship Biscuit won as he pleased while Aethelwold away to a bad start ran a much better race than the chart indicates The best race of the day was the Red Cross Handicap in which Hysterical from the Circle S Stable scored a nose victory over Neil S McCarthys Big Ben with Circle M Ranchs Big Pebble beaten but a head for second place In view of the fact he was starting for the first time since March 1 Big Pebble gave a splendid account of himself and is certain to be an improved horse in his next start He is being pointed for the Hollywood Gold Cup on July 19 and barring the unforeseen should be at his peak for the 75000 event HyCop stablemate to Big Pebble ran fourth and though he had plenty of early foot he tired when it came to the drive With Ship Biscuit the Circle M Ranch holds a good hand for the major Hollywood Park events in the offing and in the weeks to come other highly regarded stables will be sending ojut their Gold Cup candidates Saturdays Inglewood Handicap drew twenty nominations and in this 10000 added money event we can expect to see candidates for both the Derby and Gold Cup including most of those which started in the Ked Cross Handicap on Monday Those expected to face the starter are Sweepida Hysterical Big Pebble Pictor Two Ton Tony and Battle Colors the latter a candidate for Derby honors Tjiis should prove one of the best contests of the year in California and serve as a preliminary line on Gold Cup candidates The American Handi cap on July 4 should be another revealing contest as it will attract the best handicap performers in the Golden State There is a possibility that Challedon vyill face the starter for the first time since Santa Anita and also that he will meet a sturdy field of wellconditioned horses The Gold Cup is but two weeks after the American Handicap and interest In a meeting between Challedon and Mioland is but one of the highlights of the rich event There is nothing of a twohorse race in Gold Cup aspects however for even now it is apparent many sharp handicap performers will face the starter on July 19 The field will prob ¬ ably be one of the best to contest for the rich event eventWhirlaway Whirlaway has been added to Arlington Parks Hall of Fame A photomural 6x8 has been completed and will be displayed alongside the other eighteen greats when the beautiful Chicago course opens next Monday These photomurals are as attractive as any race track decorations to be found in this country When Arlington Park instituted its Hall of Fame this spring eighteen horses were named and photo murals made of them Twelve were winners of the Classic famous Arlington event for threeyearolds and the remaining six were outstanding racers Future winners of the Classic and other important Chicago races will be added Although Whirlaway is scheduled to start in the Classic it was decided to add his picture now as he is owned by the Chicagoan Warren Wright and raced at Arlington as a juvenile John D Allen president of the Arlington Park Jockey Club stated he needs no further victories to merit the honor which we are glad to bestow on a hocse bred and owned by a Chicago sportsman Warren Wrights entire Calumet string headed by Whirlaway will be at the Chicago meeting Besides Whirlaway Calumet had named Blenweed for the 40000 added Classic to be run Saturday July 26 Sun Again and Some Chance are named for the Arlington Futurity on July 12 12Speaking Speaking of Whirlaway we recently commented on the success of the Isonomy clan in this country and Herbert Bayard Swope chairman of the New York State Racing Commission and a keen student of the sport writes to say Regarding Isonomy I think you should have included the most important fact that he is the only horse in the history of the turf to have sired two winners of the Triple Crown In making this statement I do violence to Bayardo which also got two Triple Crowners Gay Crusader and Gainsborough But the British turf authorities look askance at these two because their crowns were won during the World War when the races were not all run at the home tracks Isonomy got Common which won the Triple Crown in 1891 and Isinglass winner in 1893 Commissioner Swope also makes mention of the many references of late to Gallant Foxs career as a threeyearold While he gives Gallant Fox his due lie reminds us of Colins ten victories as a two yearold and adds To me he was one of the greatest America ever knew Commissioner Swope rates Colin close to Man o War but though he does not say so his letter would leave us to believe he does not rate Gallant Fox with the two mentioned The arguments concerning the comparative great horses j are neverending The most unique track operating on the North American continent is Agua Caliente down below the Mexican border Last Sunday the feature event was a race exclusively for gray horses This coming Sunday they will stage a morning until night program of fifteen races three in the morning starting at 11 oclock and twelve in the after ¬ noon Although the racing is hardly comparable to that staged at Agua Caliente in the old days or again that now being offered at California tracks it has so many unique features it draws a capacity throng every Sunday the only day in the week in which it operates Hundreds from Lower California attend every weekend andr as Sunday racing is staged the year round it has become highly popular with those who like to attend the races but cannot do so on weekdays The track at Mexico City which is planned to be opened on the first Sunday in January will in no way Interfere with Agua Caliente as they are hundreds of miles apart The present plans for Mexico City are to stage racing four or five days each week and the latest drawings from the Mexican capitol are sufficient to reflect it will be one of the most beautiful on the American continent
