ENTRIES TO NORTHWESTERN HANDICAP CLOSE ON MONDAY MONDAYSevenFurlong SevenFurlong Stake Will Be Run at Arlington Park July 2 2Opening Opening day Monday June 23 at Arling ¬ ton Park is closing day for entries to the j 2500 added Northwestern Handicap seven furlong dash for threeyearolds and upward to be run on Wednesday July 2 This will be the third of the thirteen stakes on Arlingtons attractive program Establishment of the Northwestern Handi ¬ cap came about as the rosult of the sub ¬ stantial increase both in Dumber and endow ¬ ments of Arlingtons stakes this year Ac ¬ tually the Northwestern is a renewal of the sevenfurlong feature formerly run on open ¬ ing day and known as the Inaugural Handi ¬ cap It is in reality an old stake with a new name and a better one a name that can be perpetuated regardless of where the handi ¬ cap may fit in future stake schedules It was felt desirable to eliminate entirely the name Inaugural which is commonly used at many race tracks tracksThe The Northwestern under its former name Inaugural Handicap had an interesting his ¬ tory following its first running in 1930 when it was won by Silverdale That son of The Porter and Margaret Ogden also won 4n 1931 and was one of two horses to win two runnings of the race Indian Runner having turned the trick in 1933 and 1934 the same years he won the Stars and Stripes Handi ¬ cap capOther Other winners of the sevenfurlong dash were Gold Step who had a long career eventually leading to the lower claiming ranks where he was still winning in 1939 at the age of twelve Some Pomp dam of Calumet Farms Some Chance this years winner of the National Stallion Stakes Fraidy Cat Mower and Drudgery DrudgeryWith With many good sprinters on the grounds racing secretary Robert S Shelley antici ¬ pates a strong field of entries for the North ¬ western
