THIRD COVEY CAPTURES BUNKER HILL HANDICAP HEADLEY COLORBEARER BEATS LIBERTY FRANC FRANCHalfLength HalfLength Separates Leading Pair at Finish Fourth Success of Meeting for Supremus Golt GoltBOSTON BOSTON Mass June 17 Taking his sec ¬ ond major stake of the Suffolk Downs meet ¬ ing Third Covey from the stable of the Kentucky breeder and owner Hal Price Headley scored a sparkling triumph in the one mile of the Bunker Hill Handicap top attraction on todays holiday card It was the fourth win in five outings during the current meeting for the consistent son of Supremus and Paradox included among his triumphs being the Paul Revere Handicap HandicapBy By his score in the Bunker Hill Third Covey added 5010 to his earnings bringing the total of his winnings for the year to 13000 Following the winner over the line after having carried the brunt of the pace making burden and beaten by a scant half length came Liberty Franc from the string of J U Gratton It was a close fight for the other portions of the 5000 added prize when Mrs M C Breens Sundodger reached the finish just a nose in advance of Star Boarder racing for Mrs Sam Orr OrrOf Of the fourteen named overnight Johnnie J Bold and Bad Votum Master Key and Wise Bee declined the issue leaving nine to face the barrier barrierThird Third Covey had to be at his best to tri ¬ umph and Sterling Young by his capable handling of the colt came in for a fair measure of praise TRAILS IN EARLY RUNNING RUNNINGGoing Going to the first turn Liberty Franc forged to the front The Headley colt was back in the ruck along with Patrol Scout Robart had to ease back with the Winters fiveyearold Young took a chance and sent Third Covey up on the outside He was not forced to lose much ground and was in an advantageous position once straightening out for the run down the far side of the track Liberty Franc followed closest by Sassy Lady raced well out from the others for the first half mile Night Editor was right there and Sundodger held to a prominent posi ¬ tion Third Covey also moved up and was in the middle of the track trackYoung Young continued to a position on the out ¬ side and he was not losing any appreciable amount of ground Sassy Lady had given Avay With threequarters of the race com ¬ pleted Night Editor was pressing the pace ¬ maker closest Sundodger and the Headley colt were moving together Dupps had the Bull Dog colt under hard urging Third Covey was gaining slowly but had not yet been let down Liberty Franc and the Breen colt were racing closely locked with only that last furlong to be covered coveredLiberty Liberty Franc was holding Sundodger safe Third Covey had now been asked to improve his speed steadily moved to the leader and responding to every call of his rider cut down the gap that separated him from the pacemaker The Headley colt was abreast of the Gratton representative seventy yards from the finish Young gunning the Su ¬ premus colt drove him to a lead of half a length as the finish was reached Liberty Franc fought it out courageously and had almost a length to spare over Sundodger SundodgerThird Third Covey was favorite and paid 680 traveling the mile in 138 138While While the racing strip was slow at the start of the program it improved steadily to the extent that the last three races were decided over a fast course A large holiday crowd was on hand to witness the sport SHORTENING POPULAR VICTRESS v vAllan Allan T Simmons Shortening made good for the favorite players when the daughter of Brevity came from last place to register in the one mile of the Belmont Purse Just a neck back of the 6 to 5 choice Chance Yen who races for A J Lynch finished second and Hal Price Headleys Pet was third in the field of half a dozen dozenFive Five to One racing for Marshall Field showed the way for the first six furlongs with Pet in closest pursuit As the early pacemaker gave way Chance Yen worked her way up to readily assume command Shortening trailed until there remained but three furlongs to go The Simmons miss then began bettering her position on the out ¬ side A sixteenth of a mile from the finish it was still the Lynch filly that held sway However Shortening was not to be denied and moving to Chance Yen steadily had her neck in front at the finish Chance Yen was better than a length to the good of the Head ley miss in taking the place
