CUTiOOSE PROVES SURPRISE WINNER IN DETROIT OPENER OPENERCarries Carries Silks of L Combs II to Victory Over Double Whisk WhiskDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 17 Cutloose three yearold daughter of Peace Chance Seces ¬ sion sporting the silks of Leslie Combs IL raced to a surprise victory in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today Well ridden by Roy Jack Flinchum Cutloose came to the end of the six furlongs over the heavy track six lengths before Robert Grundys favored Double Whisk Third hon ¬ ors in the sprint fell to A G Silbermans Edasel which downed the nine other platers who contested contestedCutloose Cutloose was away forwardly after the good start was effected and before reaching the first quarter post he had opened up a threelength lead over Edasel The latter was two and onehalf lengths in advance of Spindletop at this stage of the running and Rockwick was a wellplaced fourth The Combs filly continued to set the pace around the upper turn and approaching the stretch she increased her advantage to four lengths while Edasel hung on in second place rather determinedly Rockwick then moved up to third when Spindletop shortened stride and gave way beaten beatenEntering Entering the stretch Cutloose went ex ¬ tremely wide and Flinchum had his hands full momentarily straightening his mount up fflr the drive Edasel charged up to offer a menacing bid but Cutloose had some ¬ thing left and drew away from her rivals to win with speed in reserve Double Whisk then closed stoutly in the final furlong to nip Edasel in the last sixteenth for second place Running time over the heavy track was 116 and Cvtloose rewarded her backers with a 3520 straight mutuel pay ¬ off offThe The return of clear and warmer weather aided in attracting a goodsized crowd to the local track today for the eightrace pro ¬ gram The track remained in an off con ¬ dition and was heavy for the initial offering The sunshine and a stiff wind dried out the course somewhat during the progress of the afternoon and evening and track superin ¬ tendent J Oliver Brown expressed the hope that tomorrows sport might be decided over an improved racing strip Continued brisk business in the wagering department was most pleasing to association officials and betting rings were well patronized through ¬ out the evening eveningThe The sixth race the Pontiac Purse served as the feature attraction and seven fine routers met under allowance conditions at one mile and seventy yards Kl A Forshas Siganar winner in his previous effort at the Fair Grounds was the medium of strong support and Beezley Cohns Felsun was also well backed for the test C Whitney Moores Seven Devils T D Buhls Aaron Burr Mrs E Clouds Hadmore Mill B Stables Mad Bachelor and Dan Lehans Miss Bonnie completed the field that contested
