I | I I Expect Huge Gathering To See Spring Handicap Sixteen Sprinters in Gansetts American Red Cross Day Feature PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 14.— Saturday is another American Red Cross day at Nar- ragansett Park. It is the last of the first four days of the meeting that have been devoted to war charities and it should be the biggest. Given fair weather, a crowd of 30,000 should wager over a million dollars through the mutuels and a vitally important and substantial sum will become available for the greatest of war-time ; funds. Precise figures will be reported im- mediately after the auditors make them available. Sixteen of the 27 horses nominated for , Saturdays feature, the Spring Handicap, to be run over six furlongs, for three-year- [ olds and upward for ,000 added, were passed through the entry box this morning. ! Five coupled entries were among them, so . the field will probably match nine or ten . sharply conditioned sprinters by the time starter Buddy Wingfield sends them away. Assigned top weight of 120 pounds is Mrs. Jake Freedmans Fire Warden, who I will be ridden by Clare Critchf ield. This gelding was a shifty sprinter in New York j ! last summer, but has not been under silks yet this season. Mrs. Margaret McCallums Reztips, 117 ] pounds, comes next in line and will be | ridden by Paul Keiper. The winner of i three handicaps at Hialeah and especially ] pointed for the Spring by trainer Joe i Camac, Reztips probably will be the public 1 choice. Dr. W. I. Lunt. local sportsman, will have I a strong candidate in Valdina Punch, win- ner of two overnight affairs in Florida and ] a galloping winner of the DeSoto Handi- I cap at Hot Springs, where he turned back the smart Roman Sox. Assessed with 114 i pounds and with the advantage of clever I ; , [ ! . . I Harry Pratt in the saddle, Dr. Lunts celt should be a keen factor in the week-end feature. Mrs. H. P. Bonners Defense, 112 pounds, has been kept in training all winter, but has not been asked for any serious effort. Word has it that shrewd old Doc Upton has timed the son of Jamestown for a strong campaign during the Gansett meet. Careless is the other half of the Bonner entry. Harry Barnett of Boston has a solid candidate in the four-year-old, Rangoon, an imported son of the great sire, Bahram. Rangoon gave evidence of his sprinting ability when he sped three-quarters in l:lf% at Tropical Park on March 18. He is fit and will shoulder 105 pounds. Herb Trent will have the mount on the Barnett star. Lyle Phillips will start an entry with Tetra Rock, 109, and Scotch Abbot, 108. Tetra Rock likes the local strip, but may be pitched a little high in the Spring, while Scotch Abbot will have improved chances should an "off" track prevail. Mose Shapoff will saddle a pair for Mrs. W. Renard in Red Vulcan, 111 pounds, and Mixer, 110. Track officials are preparing to entertain a large crowd and post time will be at the usual hour. 2:30 p. m.
