Six to Contest Bowie Handicap; Three-Year-Olds in Finite Purse Calumet Names Pensive and4 Armed for Both as Well as Twilight Tear in Dash Test BALTIMORE. Md.. April 14.— Tomorrows half-holiday program at Pimlico, where the combined meeting of Marylands four major tracks is being staged, proffers as the main attraction the ,500 added Bowie Handicap. However, this mile and 70 yards fixture fashioned for three-year-olds and older horses loses much of its importance due to the presence of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aspirants in The Finite. A ,500 purse event of allowance conditions and. naturally, exclusively for three-year-olds, it graces sev-j enth position on the program of eight I races, and entrants include Ella K. Bry-! sons Director J. E.. generally recognized I as a strong contender for both three-year-1 old classics that are occasions of the Ken-| tucky and Maryland spring season. In view of interest attached to three-j year-olds at this time of the year, The : Finite conclusively overshadows the Bowie, i Besides Director J. E.. who will tote 114 pounds including jockey J. R. Layton, others named are Calumets three-way entry of Armed, 105 pounds: Twilight Tear, 112, and Pensive, 109: Mrs. A. J. Abels Gramps Image, 114: Mrs. E. duPont Weirs Galactic, 110; Greentree Stables Tambo, 110, and Joseph Tuccis Elray, 106. Derby J candidates are Twilight Tear, Galactic, j Tambo, Gramps Image. Pensive and the aforementioned Director J. E. Preakness eligibles comprise the latter three. Won Rowe on Opening Day There are only six claimants for honors in the ,500 Bowie and here also Calumet Farm holds a strong combination, as in Wednesdays Rowe Handicap hero, Pensive, and Armed. The latter enjoyed an undefeated season this past winter in Miami. High weight for the nominal feature is Arthur J. Sacketts Tola Rosa, imposted at 111 pounds. This seven-year-old failed to capture a stake race last year, but he has earned over 0,000 so far during his career and at times has proved hard to beat, even against the best that could be mustered. He has an exceptionally high flight of speed and it would be no great surprise if he took the track and held it throughout. Remaining contestants are M. Marmor-steins Chaldon Heath, 109 pounds; Green-tree Stables Famous Victory, 104; OSulli-van Farms Pompeco. 102. and the Calumet pair, Pensive, 102, and Armed. 100. Normally a presentation at the Bowie course, war-time restrictions that forced a combined meeting here naturally brought about transfer of various stakes of the three other associations. It is expected i that a small field will go postward. The I probabilities are that either Pensive or I Armed or both may be sent against the three-year-olds, as it is trainer Ben A. | Jones intention to obtain a better "line" j on Pensive principally, as that son of Hy-! perion may go west for a try at the Derby. If either Pensive or Armed, or both, are I withdrawn in favor of the. exclusive three-year-old tilt, the Bowie could then be a wide-open affair. As previously mentioned, Tola Rose is the "class" of the event. But he has not been out in a long time. Chaldon Heath was rather consistent hereabouts last fall; Pompeco won a distance race in New Orleans last winter and Famous Victory has been idle since last I fall. The Finite should furnish a very inter-! esting race. Director J. E. dropped somewhat in estimation following his Flamingo debacle, but this colt is gifted with much speed and this ability alone is sufficient to guarantee a victory for the Bryson representative. Twilight Tear was successful in Florida. Last year she and her stable-mate, Miss Keeneland. were adjudged the outstanding fillies of the season. A stake winner last year, Galactic may earn a supplementary nomination to the Preakness should he distinguish himself tomorrow. Then there is Tambo, beaten in the role of favorite on opening day at New Yorks Jamaica. So in the offing is the possibility of a sterling duel between these three-year-olds who have designs on a "career" in endowed events.
