Report Tropical Park Sold To Yonkers Raceway Group CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 4. — It was learned here today from an authoritative source that Tropical Park, at Coral Gables, Fla., had been sold to a group who own the Yonkers Raceway in the New York City suburb. The deal, it is reported, saw 51,300,000 change hands for the property. The definite plans of the new owners have not been announced and, according to DAILY RACING FORMS informant, will not be announced for some time. Tropical Park has been on the market for the past year and last winter reports were in circulation that the property had beensold on several occasions, but they all proved groundless. Tropical Park was originally built as a dog track and then taken over by a syndicate headed by the late Bill Dwyer, who rebuilt the plant for the runners and the inaugural meeting was held in December, 1931. Later, a group headed by the late Harry ! • Straus secured the property and they have operated the track to date. NEW YORK, N. Y„ May 4.— Herbert Bayard Swope, chairman of the Tropical Park board of directors, was not available at a late hour today for confirmation of the report from Kentucky. W. H. Cane, president of the Yonkers Raceway, when apprised of it, denied that he, or a certain group with which he is associated in the trotting track, had purchased the Florida running horse course. He said: "I personally am not interested in Tropical Park, nor is the group which X represent. However, X was approached, and I understand Tropical Park recently changed handa."
