Spats Gets Up for Head Victory at Suffolk Downs Odds-On Choice Gets Decision Over Exemplar, Liberty Andy By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 2. — Mrs. G. Robertsons Spats gained a head decision in the featured Riverside Purse but not before the Cravat miss gave her legion of followers many anxious moments throughout the six-furlong dash. Second in the close finish was Felix M. Poncelets Exemplar, a half length before Mrs. Tilyou Christophers Liberty Andy. A crowd of 12,452 were on hand to witness todays sport at Suffolk Downs, conducted under ideal weather conditions. Week-end rains Tiad left the racing strip deep in mud when the first race was run but the quickly drying oval had changed to slow in time for the feature. Spats time for the six panels was 1:12% and jockey Harold "Red" Keene had to push and slash through the final sixteenth of a mile to get his mount up in time for the victory. Spats popular score was the third time a choice had succeeded during the after-; noon. The majority of the crowd installed the seven-year-old mare at odds-on and were rewarded with a .40 pay-off. Exemplar, a greatly improved son of Hoop Jr., took the van before a quarter mile, when it was apparent that young George Glassner was not allowing the fleet Liberty Rab to run himself into the ground as he usually does. Mestiza was close up with the pace and the Christopher colt next in line and saving ground. Keene had Spats in fourth position and under wraps until the three-furlong pole was reached. J
