On the Trot TrotBy By MORRIE KURLANSKY KURLANSKYGood Good Time Pace Springs Surprise Audrey Castle Scores Fourth Win Impressive Reports on Darn Safe SafeMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywood HI June 9 The outcome of the Good Time Pace was a big surprise inasmuch as Gene Hayes minion Grattan stal ¬ lion owned by Herman Graham Salem HI with Jack Beasley in the sulky outsmarted his archrivals H D Hanover and Dale Wingay Altogether the race was somewhat of a riddle from the start to the finish Dee Stover who substituted hind Miss ShineAMite immediately after the Go rushed up with the Volomite mare to take command gained a momen ¬ tary lead of over a length but slowed down before the quarter pole was reached That there was something peculiar in the offing could be anticipated when the time of 32 for the first quarter was flashed Audrey Castle a 24class pacer had covered the initial quarter in her race the same night in 30ys and here the freefor all sidewheelers went almost two seconds slower slowerFor For C F Rumley this clip was too slow and rounding the far turn he rushed up with Dale Wingay to get the lead closely followed by H D Hanover Miss Shine AMite Gene Hayes Chief DalYum and Caramac The second quarter however was not faster On the contrary pale Wingay was timed in 104 for the first half Entering the backstretch Cara ¬ mac moved up with a good burst of speed but did not get to the top Dale Wingay holding on with H D Hanover and Miss ShineAMite directly behind him himAround Around the last turn Gene Hayes began to move and gained second position on the inside of the very wide going Dale Win gay The opening on the rail wide as a barn door was good enough for Gene Hayes to be on even terms with the leader within one second and getting the lead in the next With sails set for home Dale Wingay and H D Hanover could not resist Gene Hayes burst of speed and the Salem speed ¬ ster was a length to the good at the wire while a photo was needed to separate H D Hanover from Dale Wingay by a scant nose Caramac came in fourth more than seven lengths behind Gene Hayes and Chief Dal Yum and Miss ShineAMite were out ¬ distanced after having made a speed break in the last turn when already well beaten beatenThe The last quarter was paced in 31 which clearly shows both Edgar Leonard with H D Hanover and C F JRumley with Dale Wingay relied on the late speed of their charges and apparently had not reckoned with the finishing power of Gene Hayes who perhaps was favored by the slow pace for the first threequarters and the rail opening com ¬ ing into the stretch garnered his first victory out of five starts this year yearThomas Thomas Keatings Chicagoowned mare Audrey Castle by Me I Win was credited with her fourth win in five outings this spring last Saturday night Again it was a frontgoing victory for the Stan Stucker trained pacer who set such a swift pace that Stucker could afford to ease her up at the end none of her opponents being able to threaten her during any part of jthe race While only a few days ago the sixyearold pacing mare Chief Mite had set a standard with 201 at Hazel Park Detroit the sensational news came Saturday night from Roosevelt Raceway New York that HiLos Forbes had paced the mile in 158 in a winning race over the Long Island halfmile track Since Roosevelt Raceway uses an electronic timer there can be no doubt about the authen ¬ ticity of that new record but horsemen still have not digested ihis amazing time Only three horses in the long history of harness racing have managed to beat 200 on a halfmile track namely Greyhound who trotted the mile in 159 in 1937 at Goshen Billy Direct who paced in 159 at Altamont New York and Sampson Han ¬ over up to Saturday the fastest harness horse over a halfmile track with his ef ¬ fort of 159 in September of 1951 at Delaware Ohio Both Greyhound and Billy Direct got their records in a time trial while Sampson Hanover earned his mark markin in the second heat of a race Hazel Park is about 100000 ahead of Maywood Park in average mutuel handle The figure for the Michigan track is over the 300000 mark and the manage ¬ ment of that track has announced sub ¬ stantial increases in purse distribution for the last two weeks of their meeting The grapevine reports from Du Quoin III are very impressive on the chances of the Hayes Fair Acres twoyearold trotting colt Darn Safe a full brother to Lord Steward 3 202 The plain looking colt has shown better than 200 speed for a quarter reportedly having been clocked in 29 working with Dudley Hanover 157 6 The Darnley colt is out of the Protector matron Protectar ine 4 206 Easter Flowers in the Frank Taylor menage continued her winning ways at Fairgrounds Speedway Louisville getting the nod in 208 at the Kentucky ovaL ovaLA A memorandum to Maywood Park horse ¬ men anent horses unable to qualify at this meeting For Thursday noon two per ¬ formance races have been carded for 30 class trotters and 30class pacers From now on declarations will not be accepted on any 30class horse that has not qualified in a performance race and hasnt been ap ¬ proved by the officials Also horses on the starters list will go in a special matinee race and their showing in that bona fide mile will have a direct bearing on their further admission to the regular races at night
