Gay Larkspur Under Hard Drive to Win Ashtabula AshtabulaOutlasts Outlasts As Ordered Under Moras Urging at Cranwood Park Course CourseCRANWOOD CRANWOOD PARK Warrensviile Heights Ohio June 9 After several tor ¬ nadoes and severe electrical storms lashed this area last evening the weather took a sudden turn for the good and a crowd of 3457 turned out to view the ninerace pro gram under excellent overhead conditions The track was slow but the racing was quite formful with one favorite and several second choices getting home in front 4 4The The featured Ashtabula Purse at six furlongs was taken by Joe Levines Gay Larkspur who was capably handled by the veteran Chico Mora The winners mar ¬ gin was a halflength over the onrushing As Ordered who in turn was two and one half lengths before Second Sight The fa vorite Grand One lacked a Tally and wound up fifth in the sevenhofse test Gay Larkspur paid 1120 and was timed in 118 118Gay Gay Larkspur gained the advantage at once in here and as the horses raced into the backstretch was two lengths in front with Ball the Jack second and Second Sight moving along in third position RacJ ing into the far turn Gay Larkspurs lead had been cut in half with Second Sight now ranging up and As Ordered in third position positionOn On the stretch turn the eventual winner once again drew clear by two lengths but As Ordered started to ramble while on the extreme outside In the final 70 yards Mora kept the gelded son of Blue Larkspur on his toes and he just lasted over As Ordered OrderedThe The winner was making his eleventh start of the season and was picking up his second purse purseOur Our Peggy ridden by Buck Thornburg for his second success of the afternoon scored a threequarters of a length decision over the favorite Hurstland in the Bill McColgan Purse fourth on the program Our Peggy paid 820 and her time for the six furlongs was 1 20 20Our Our Peggy was very nicely rated by Thornburg who has displayed excellent saddleiorm in the past few weeks and was allowed to go well off the early pace being set by Dikranagerd and Dark Image On the stretch turn the eventual winner moved up rapidly on the outside of Dik ¬ ranagerd and in the final 70 yards drew clear under a hard drive Hurstland closed gamely through the stretch under jockey Al Gaither but was rated far back in the first quarter and the gelding could not make up the necessary ground groundBill Bill McColgan of Station WGAR was in the winners circle for a brief ceremony following the race named in his honor Ib is the policy of Cranwood Park to name a race a day for a well known radio or tele ¬ vision sportscaster in the Cleveland area This will be continued for the next 10 aft
