BARRY WH1TEHEAD Name Whitehead Racing Secretary at Golden Gate GateSucceeds Succeeds Thomas in Post at Albany California Course CourseALBANY ALBANY Calif June 9 Barry White head of San Francisco young turf official today was named racing secretary at Golden Gate Fields His appointment was made public by Charles E Coughlin general manager of the East Bay track as White head departed with his family for Mexico City where he will serve during the next three weeks as a steward at the Hipodromo de Las Americas Whitehead who officiated as racing secretary at the Mexican course just 10 years ago will return to his new duties here in midJuly The new racing secretary will fill the spot occupied last season by Ivan Thomas who like Whitehead is recognized as one of Americas ranking young turf officials Because of Mr Thomas other commit ¬ ments this year including his present ac ¬ tivity as director of racing at Centennial Race Track in Denver it was impossible for him to return to Golden Gate Fields this season in the same capacity said Coughlin CoughlinWe We are extremely fortunate in having Barry Whitehead available at this time to take up the important duties of racing sec ¬ retary Mr Whitehead is no stranger to Golden Gate Fields as turf followers know Be was pur racing secretary in 1947 when we opened for business and we are happy this his circumstances permit him to re ¬ turn to our official family familyMeanwhile Meanwhile Coughlin declared that he is exploring the possibility that Thomas might be able to complete his obligations in Den ¬ ver in time to serve as a racing official at the forthcoming Golden Gate Fields meet ¬ ing which will open on Monday Septem ¬ ber 14 and run through Thursday October 29 The Centennial season closes on Sep ¬ tember 12 12Whitehead Whitehead is also racing secrtary at Tari foran a position he has held for nearly a decade
