SMOKE SCREENrrThe New Orleans Handicap winner makes his Illinois debut this afternoon at Hawthorne Smoke Screen in Lake Bluff Purse Fair Grounds Star Returns to Action ActionPoints Points for Lincoln Handicap At Hawthorne Fast Band of Sophomores Vie in McHenry McHenryHAWTHORNE HAWTHORNE Cicero HI June 9 The six and onehalf furlongs Lake Bluff Purse one of the features on Lincoln Fields mid ¬ week program at Hawthorne will mark the return to the races of Reverie Knoll Farms Smoke Screen for the first time since the Fair Grounds meeting at New Orleans where he won the A B Letellier LeCompte and New Orleans handicaps and was one of the outstanding horses at that winter meeting meetingHe He will meet some good ones in the Lake Bluff including Mrs L J Hermanns Bloom Sam E Wilsons Jet Fleet M H VanBergs Vantage and Can Locate Fred W Hoopers Irishbred Royal Moccasin and H G Maggio J J Gregorys Stoner Creek CreekSmoke Smoke Screen has been training well at this track and is being pointed for the 20000 Lincoln Handicap on June 20 clos ¬ ing day of this Lincoln Fields meetings meetingsTwo Two hard knocking geldings both win ¬ ners of their latest two starts at this meet ¬ ing are among the threeyearolds entered for tomorrows 5000 McHenry Purse a sixfurlong dash fashioned exclusively for horses that age which have not won a sweepstakes in 1953 Those conditions could let in some rather good ones and in fact did Besides Hardback and McCreight the two geldings indicated above the probable starters include Fred W Hoopers good filly Eddie Sue winner of the Bay State Kindergarten Stakes and four other races last year yearDouble Double Winner at Meeting MeetingMcCreight McCreight a brown gelding owned by Anthony Graffagnini of New Orleans chalked up his fourth and fifth wins of the year when he won at this Lincoln Fields meeting on May 28 and June 1 respectively He did not start last year yearHardback Hardback a bay gelding bred by Charles T Fishers Dixiana is one of the two horseentry for the McHenry belonging to the Chicagoan Henry D Maggio Hardback made it three wins out of six starts when he scored consecutive victories here at Hawthorne on May 30 and June 4 In his first start at this meeting on May 23 he finished second to Pussy Cat He won pre ¬ viously at New Orleans in February FebruaryAs As a running mate tomorrow Hardback will have the chestnut colt Set Shot win ¬ ner of five races this year and unplaced only three times in 12 starts for the sea ¬ son He won two consecutive races at New Orleans last February also two in a row at Sportsmans Park after coming north then added one more to that consecutive string with a victory at Hawthorne on May 20 In his latest start on June 1 he finished second to McCreight McCreightBesides Besides her five victories last year the stakes winning filly Eddie Sue was sec ¬ ond in the Pollyanna Stakes to Calumet Farms Bubbley and also took fourth money in Hawthornes Durazna Stakes and Keenelands Alcibiades Her return to the races is one of the numerous interesting features of the McHenry Purse PurseOthers Others named for the McHenry include T M Daniels Yea Bama a winner here on May 23 B W Landys Red Speed Fair ¬ way Farms Good Call Harry Alasmans entry of Blenriam and Spirit Away M M Mitchells Master Red and Dixianas Spy Defense DefenseGood Good Call won three races last year and placed in stakes including the Alcibiades at Keenland in which she was second to Sweet Patootie She was second to Emardee in the Jasmine Stakes at Hialeah last Jan ¬ uary 21 21Red Red Speed a chestnut gelding by Count Speed Smart Daughter purchased from Mrs J D Hertz for a reported 25000 last year won his first race of the current sea ¬ son at the New Orleans Fair Ground last February He finished third to Amati at the present meeting on May 20 20Spy Spy Defense is sure to make his presence felt even though he did not fare to well in the Peabody Memorial last out
