PRODDING THE ENGLISH JOCKEY CLUB LONDON, England, August 11. Because of a failure to properly care for race track telegraphic facilities at Goodwood, the Jockey Club is coming in for some harsh general criticism. The Jockey Clubs conservatism jars on public opinion and it has made several recent mistakes, notably the increase of program juice at Newmarket. This error was, however, corrected. Out of the Goodwood wire wrangle comes the information that the Duke of Richmond, who owns the course, makes some 50,-000 out of its meeting and refused to spend ,500 or so to put in the wires which he had allowed to be taken out. When criticism began it gathered force and spread to the Jockey Club, which is accused of penury, profit-making and general failure to foster racing. There are calls for more liberality about Epsom, Doncaster and Newmarket stake money and for the publication of the clubs balance sheet. There is said to be a big sum in the treasury which i being piled up for the purpose of acquiring real estate at the clubs Newmarket headquarters.
