The Preakness is for three-year-old colts and fillies; geldings are* not eligible, and the distance is one mile and three-sixteenths. The Preakness will be run Friday, May 8, a week and a day before the running of the Kentucky Derby, thereby enabling owners to start their eligibles in both races if they so desire. A number of them are planning to do so, as the majority of those named for the Preakness are also among the entries for the Kentucky Derby. It had previously been announced that Quatrain, the sensational winner of the New Orleans Handicap and Louisiana Derby, would be sent here for the Preakness, but there are some doubts now that he will be ready, while Andrew Blakely has Master Charlie at Jamaica, where the finishing touches of his training will be completed for the big Pimlico race. Stimulus is among the entries for the Preakness, but it was announced last week that Marshall Fields crack colt would be an absentee from both this race and the Kentucky Derby, having gone wrong in his training. The II. P. Whitney candidates number such stars of last year as Mother Goose and Candy Kid, together with Courageous, Overall, The Bat, Backbone, Coronation and Reminder, all in training here in Maryland. W. S. Kilmer has named his formidable quartet, Sunny Man, Sun Circle, Sunsard and Sun Hathor, all of which are reported quite forward in condition. There are many who believe that Sunny Man will be hard to beat in both the Preakness and Kentucky Derby. The two crack Kentucky colts, Kentucky Cardinal and Lee 0. Cotner, are likewise among the Preakness eligibles and, as both are already in fine fettle, they may be sent here to try for the rich prize.
