History of American Derby The American Derby was the outstanding three-year-old race of this country from its inception in 1884 to 1904, the year of the last running at famous old Washington Park, virtually in the heart of Chicago. The history of the old race is replete with the deeds of some of Americas most famous thoroughbreds and noted jockeys. The picturesque and successful breeder and owner, E. J. "Lucky" Baldwin, whose famous Santa Anita ranch in California was one of the most renowned breeding farms in the world, won the American Derby four times, and the greatest of all colored jockeys, Isac Murphy, rode four winners. Not only are some of Americas best horses among the winners but likewise others equally famous or greater are found among those which failed in this coveted race. After Washington Park was dismantled in 1906, the American Derby and with it Chicago racing became only a memory. For over twenty years this great Western Metropolis was denied a sport which in the past was an integral part of its life. Then, in 1926, a new Washington Park was bifilt and the American Derby renewed. It has been continued each year since, though in 1928, It was run at Arlington Park, with Washington Park unopened because of financial difficulties. Since being renewed in 1926 the American Derby has been contested and won by some of the outstanding three-year-olds of each year. The 1935 running should prove no exception, as the field includes some of the most representative of that age, with the prospective winner worthy to be enrolled with the notable horses from Modesty in 1884 to Cavalcade in 1934, as found in the following tabulation, embracing as it does many pertinent facts in connection with the American Derby: Year.
