r. ♦ Tola Rose Leads at All Markers To Account For Bowie Handicap Director J. E. Romps Home In Finite Purse at Pimlico — Rainy Weather Mars Sport BALTIMORE, Md., April 15. — One day in the summer of 1942 at Empire City, Tola Rose had a "job." holding off Whirlaway in the Butler Handicap, but this afternoon the Arthur J. Sackett representative annexed the sixth running of the Bowie Handicap without much difficulty. Leading throughout the mile and 70 yards, for which he was timed in l:462s over a sloppy track, as 16,500 patrons crammed Pimlico in spite of rain for this first Saturday of- fering of the combined meeting of Maryland four major tracks, the seven-year-old had three lengths to spare over the ! ! Calumet Farms three-year-old. Pensive, the favorite, at the finish of this fourth , i race. Famous Victory, from the Greentree I Stable, was third, a like distance farther 1 buck, and Chaldon Heath and Pompeco : completed the field in the order named. From beginning to end it was all Tola Rose. Willie Mehrtens got the son of I I Head Play away alertly. Pensive, Wednes- , I days winner of the Rowe. and Pompeco followed closely. These two were persistent j i in attempts to reach the Sackett color-bearer, I but he was just as determined to [ put distance between himself and adversaries. He did so to win by three J lengths. Notwithstanding dismal weather, hardly 1 conducive to enjoyment of the sport since 1 1 an aggravating drizzle fell all afternoon, 1 | the public accepted the program enthusi-I astically. Some favorites fell by the wayside. Makes Amends for Flamingo Drubbing 1 , Making partial amends, anyway for his Flamingo Stakes drubbing, Ella K. Bry-sons t Director J. E. captured the Finite ; Purse, ,500 allowance number, listed as J ! seventh and which because of including ! Derby and Preakness eligibles to an extent j overshadowed the Bowie Handicap. Showing a distinct liking for the sloppy going, Director J. E. took over from Armed practically at leisure and then sauntered to a . two-length victory. Armed, however, held , the place, four lengths before Gramps Image. Galactic, Tambo and Elray completed the field in that order. As favorite. Director J. E. brought about a .60 for ; mutuel pay-off and was timed the six furlongs in 1:15%. Ably handled by jockey J. R. Layton, the Bryson Kentucky Derby and Preakness 3 hope was held close to Armed, who essayed " to outsprint the field. This was not t to the ultimate winners liking evidently, • for he "dogged" the early pacemaker more - or less at ease and then rounding the far r turn ranged alongside. Entering the stretch 1 he assumed command and went on to his s third triumph of the year.
