HISSES INSTEAD OF CHEERS. VAST THRONG AT OAKLAND EXPRESSES CONDEMNATION OF MCAFFERTYS TACTICS. Dr. Leggo Scores a Decisive Victory in Burns Handicap, but Previous Defeats Prove to Have Been Beneficial to This End. San Francisco, Cal., January 27. Dr. Leggo, heavily backed at fours, won the Burns Handicap, at a mile and a quarter, and the richest handicap stake in the United States west of New York, in decisive fashion at Oakland this afternoon. The vast assemblage of enthusiastic turf devotees that witnessed the colts brilliant victory at first received the result in profound silence. Then the few scattering cheers, from lucky investors on the horses chances were drowned in a general storm of hisses. There was universal condemnation for the juggling tactics pursued with this horse to get weight off and the local press is unanimous in the harshest of criticisms leveled at owner C. C.
