GROSGRAIN SETS A NEW AMERICAN RECORD. Wishard Is Pined 00 and Suspended for Six Days for Carelessly Riding Handmore. New Orleans, La., January 27. A new American racing record was established at City Park ihis afternoon. It was in the first race at two miles and seventy yards, won by Orosgrain In 3:35, after a driving finish with Handmore. The previous record for this distance was 3:3ft, made by Jack Bradley at St. Louis, August 24, 1808. Jack Bradley was then a sis-year-old and carried 103 pounds. Orosgrain Is a four-year-old and carried 101 pounds. Orosgrain scored his victory by a nose, though many in the stand were of the opinion that Handmore had won. He would have been tho winner had not Wishard, in attempting to draw the finish fine, tossed off the race. The judges fined Wishard 00 and suspended him for six days for his carelessness. Handmore was found to have been cut down. Ross-mond, the heavily backed favorite, ran a poor race and finished among the tailenders. Goldmate proved a surprise in the Legarde Selling Stakes, which was the feature of the card. He won in a common canter by a half dozen lengths. The favorite. Merely Mary Ann, after showing prominently for six furlongs, faded away when it came to a drive and was nearly beaten for second place by Jarp. The only winning favorite of the day was Envoy In the closing race. Python was the surprise in the hurdle race. He had to be hustled some to beat the heavily backed Ben Battle, but was never in trouble from Onyx II., the sluggish favorite. Archibald, in au effort to secure the race through a disqualification, claimed that Gaddy cut him off at the turn into the homestretch. The patrol judge reported that Python was clear at the time and that no interference occurred. Archibald was promptly fined 5 for making a frivolous claim. .Mint Boy went to his knees when the barrier went up for the third race and was virtually left. Pat Dunne recently presented to Joe McLennan, manager for jockeys Nicol and Wishard, the three-year-old colt Girard, by Goodrich Lulu McLean. Glrard, which is a winner at the meeting, outworked Padre, this morning.
