PHIL FINCH WINS THE RAILWAYS HANDICAP. Williams Gelding Shows a Brilliant Performance Black Mate Runs Away and Then Wins. New Orleans, La., January 27. Phil Finch, under a burden of 132 pounds, top weight, easily won the City Railways Handicap from Little Scout, Lleber, Ie Iteszke, Guiding Star, Monaco Maid, Hallowmas and King Ellsworth at Crescent Park this afternoon. The distance was one and one-sixteenth miles and the time 1:48. This performance stamps Phil Finch a formidable opponent in any company, provided be retains his present good form. After the race W. S. Williams was asked what be thought of the weight allotment made by Handlcapper Vos-Imrgn 107 on Phil Finch and 110 on Rams Horn in Oie Brighton Handicap. "I think Mr. Vosburgh erred when he put 110 on Rams Horn and only 107 on Phil Finch," said he. "My opinion is that Phil Finch lias ten pounds less on him than he should carry. Rams Horn has been harshly dealt with." Equalling the achievement of Phil Finch was that of Black Mate in the race for youngsters. Black Mate is a fractious actor and he caught ONeill unguarded wlille going to the post and unseated him. Finding himself riderless, he cantered off nearly a mile at top speed before be was captured again. He was remounted by Freeman. He was away poorly, but shortly wore down all opponents save Zick Ahrams, which he caught in the final furlong, winning as his rider pleased. Jockey ONeills injuries, while not serious, will keep him out of the saddle for a few days. He has a deep gash in the leg and a badly bruised hip. The mount on Black Mate was of his own seeking. He sized up the colt for a good one when he last started and tried to buy him. The owner refused to sell, but asked ONeill to ride him when next out. M. W. Seanlon today filed an affidavit with the stewards, stating that no one was interested with him in the ownership of the horse Friendless, whereupon the horse was returned to him and the purse paid. Miss Custi. broke her leg while running second In the race for two-year-olds and was destroyed. The accident was a peculiar one, as no one seemed to be near her at the time of the mishap.
