GOOD LUCK WINS THE CALIFORNIA DERBY. Chicago Horse Simply Canters Away With the Prize and His Stable Companion Is Third. San Francisco, Cal., February 22. Good Luck, Mf H. TIchenor and Co.s fine son of Sandringham, won the rich California Derby at a mile and a quarter from, seven others practically all the way and was only cantering at the end. Difficult track conditions prevailed and the time, 2:103, was considered a meritorious performance. Hammeraway, from the same stable, finished a good third behind Barney Schreibers crack Sain colt, Nealon. The entry was coupled in the betting at odds-on. Ideal weather conditions and the first class card contributed to a great holiday attendance. Four favorites, three at meager odds, rewarded the betting contingent. The victory of the long shot. Young Pilgrim, is said to have drained-the resources of the layers more heavily than the trio of successful public choices. George C. Bennett and M. II. Tichenor were two of the prominent turfmen from the middle west at Oakland this afternoon. Leroy Williams, the colored jockey, has recovered from his recent illness and will ride during the week.
