DEVOUT WINS THE FEATURE. LEADS JOHN CARROLL ALL THE WAY IN HANDICAP AT CITY PARK. Every Favorite Defeated At the Old Track Many Horsemen Aro Leaving New Orleans For the North. New Orleans, La., March 21. In the feature race at City Park today, a mile and a sixteenth handicap, Devout easily defeated his opponents, which included John Carroll, the 3 to 5 favorite. Devout was ridden by Mclntyre and won all the way. Jockey Oregar carried off the riding honors with three victories to his credit. Favorites won two of the races, the successful choices being Clyde and Auroceiver. The steeplechase proved au easy thing for the rejuvenated Lord Radnor,- which was making Ills first appearance after a rest of two months. The stables of T. P. Hayes and P. M. West were shipped north last night, the former went to Nashville and the latter to Churchill Downs, Louisville. Jockeys D. Austin and Griffith went with the Hayes stable. The three-year-old Quinn Brady, recently purchased by J. P. Mayberry from W. A. Kirwau. pulled up very lame after a workout this morning. Tames H. McCormlcks string left tills afternoon for Sheepshead Bay. The car was held over until after the running of the first race iu which the filly Mary Morris was a starter. As soon as the latter was cooled out she was put aboard. It. L. Rogers sent Garnish with McCormlcks string. Sam Tarmer arrived from Nashville this morning- to arrange for the shipment of the horses he has been racing here this winter. Parmer is also trying to secure jockey Swain for the coming summer on the Northern Circuit. lie is negotiating with J. II. Baker, who holds the contract on the boys services. "Kid" AVeller arrived from San Francisco this morning and spent the afternoon at City Park. He left for Cincinnati tonight. Steeplechase jockey Tully who has been riding at Los Angeles, arrived tills morning and will remain at City Park until the conclusion of the meeting. Judge Trevelyan again had a number of bookmakers, horsemen and steeplechase riders before him this morning in connection with the recent scandalous steeplechase iu which Miller pulled Judge Nolan. Nothing official was given out, but it is said that the colls are tightening around a well known western bookmaker. The card at the old track was a most ordinary one and was noteworthy only because of a couple of exceptionally bad rides and the defeat of all the favorites. The rides referred to were those of Warren and McCarley on Whippoorwill and Tenuis, respectively. Both are inexperienced stable boys and little was to be expected of them, but it appeared that both horses would have won had they had just so much dead weight strapped on them and allowed to run loose. Both finished second.
