RALBERTS RUNNING CAUSES COMMENT. Charles C. McCafferty is again drawing the fire of racing critics In California. Tills time it is about the "in and out" running of, Ralbert. This is what the San Francisco Chronicle has to say on the subject: "The writer has frequently been compelled to sharply criticise the way Charles McCafferty runs his horses. It is a most unpleasant task, especially as the last time it concerned the peculiar tactics which led up to the winning of the Burns handicap by that good race horse Dr. Leggo. It may be that Charles McCafferty is unfortunate iu the indifferent way his. horses perform when the public figure them the best, or it may be that the Texas owner has a shade on the public. That, of course, is largely a matter of individual opinion, and possibly not susceptible of absolute proof. At any rate, what the mass or racegoers, think would not read well in print. It lias been shown that McCafferty lias been as much fooled In his own horses as the general public and has lost good-sized bets at times.- "But the judges should protect the public in regard to the McCafferty horses, whether their .running is due to accident, incompetency, or design. McCafferty should be told In plain English that Ids horses must run to form like other stables, or his entries should be refused. The public is certainly entitled to protection, and if the McCafferty horses are to be permitted to run in and out, other owners might avail themselves of the same -privileges, and the outcome would be very disastrous to the turf interests of California. McCafferty must perforce !e a great logician to satisfactorily explain to the judges the in-and-out performances of some of his horses. This is all preliminary to the sudden recovery of form by Ralbert. "On Tuesday, March C, Ralbert defeated the mighty Tocolaw in a race over the Futurity course. Italbertiu his next essay beat Mistys Pride, a hot favorite, in the easiest possible style. After his two victories, Ralbert was made a 9 to 20 favorite in a race over the Futurity course on March ill. hi tills race Ralbert was easily beaten by David Behind at a difference of eight pounds In weight. Not only was Ralbert beaten by David Boland, but lie iiad to be hard ridden to beat out St. Francis and The Mist. "In the race yesterday, Friday, March 1G, Ralbert was a wild horse, and the way he beat a good field was inspiring If one could shut his eyes to his previous effort. Where would The Mist and St. Francis have been at the finish of the sixtli race yesterday if tliey had started? If there are any defenders of McCafferty they will doubtless blame the mud for the difference in the form of Ralbert. But a horse that can negotiate the heavy going can certainly run lu the slush. The last two performances cannot be reconciled. The dupe shows that Ralbert performed indifferently at 9 to 20 and ran like a race horse at 7 to 2, which was the top price laid against him yesterday."
