LATONIA CLUBS SUMMER MEETING BEGINS. Scott Hudson and T. P. Hayes Engineer Successful Coups with Camp and Redgauntlet. Cincinnati, O., July 5. The Latonia Jockey Clubs summer meeting of thirty-three days, really an extension of the spring meeting, legan today. It is scheduled to elose August 11. Threatening weather and an ordinary card combined to keep the attendance down to small numbers. Speculation also fell off noticeably. The sharpshooters scored heavily and several horses were made mediums of well engineered coups. The first was brought about in the second race when Camp, owned by Scott Hudson, won in impressive style and enriched his owner considerably. T. P. Hayes, also, so rumor had it, scored heavily over the bookmakers when Redgauntlet won the fifth race from good company. The t-olt, however, was extremely lucky to win. lie was away poorly and had to close a big gap. Cottontowns victory in the handicap, was an impressive one and the time made by him for a mile over the slow track was particularly commendable. J. H. Shouldice, owner of Knowledge, claimed Gruuada, which finished second in the sixth race, paying T. J. Nicol 1906.sh00 for him. , William Phillips, trainer of Fred Cooks horses, was among todays visitors. Asked concerning the rumor that his employer is contemplating the sale of all his horses, he said that he had tried to persuade Cook for some time to sell, but that he had never definitely determined to so. While at the post for the fifth race, jockey D. Riley was kicked by Harold D. The rider, although sustaining a bad bruise,, rode out his engagements during the afternoon. After the last race rain began falling and the outlook at present Is that the track will be muddy tomorrow.
