SMOKER WINS HIS FIR8T RACE THIS YEAR. Favorites Sweep the Washington Card — Good Weather and Big Attendance. Washington. D. C. March 26. — The racing today was in many ways the best of the meeting so far. The weather was perfect and the attendance larger than on any day since Monday. All of the races resulted in spirited contests and were extremely interesting. Four favorites and two second choices were returned the winners, which made the day distinctly profitable for the visitors. Very little in the way of trials -has escaped the sharpshooters and the volume of speculation has been steadily increasing. Notwithstanding that SmokT, from the Madden stable, won the first race after being backed down to less than even money, his race was a disappointment. Tantoufie lost the race through the superior riding of Shaw on the winner. Spencer Wells escai ed the early interference which he met in the running of the Arlington purse on the opening day and led all the way today. Jubilee, making his appearance for the first time this year and in receipt of thirteen pounds from Bellwether, won the third race in a bard drive. Jockey Shaw did not ride as skillfully in this race as he did in the first or he might have won with Rellwether in spite of the difference in weight. He succeeded in leaving the post with his mount in front, but did not appear to take advantage of it. Silver Ball won the closing race in a canter after indulging the early pacemakers. Grace Cameron and Grandpa, with the lead to the stretch, where she forged to the front and increased her lead as the race progressed. Oroonoka, a new starter, acted green at the post and. wheeling as the barrier was sprung, was left. Tellfare ran like a wild horse today in the hunters steeplechase, which was the feature of the card. He secured the lead right after the start and led throughout, winning with plenty of speed in reserve. Recruit fenced well and was second liest, but no match for the winner. Jockey McCarthy rode two winners again today. finishing first with his only mounts. There was a big increase in the number of bookmakers this afternoon, eighty five making prices.
