NOTES OF THE TURF. August Belmonts Half Sovereign is temporarily out of training as he result of having been kicked bv one of her stable companions. Two members of the Ontario cabinet had the pleasure of leading winners on the opening day at Toronto— Hon. Adam Beck and Hon. J. S. Hendrie. Hilarious and Fayette have lioth been out for ox ercise since the i aaiilai of the Withers ami neither shows any ill effects, Fayette will be a starter in the *.".il.HK Belmont Stakes next week. Hilarious next important engagement is in the Brooklyn Han dicap. The management of the Ftah Jockey Club has decreed that none of the results of the racing al Salt Like City shall be given out until the close of each days program. To this end. telephones have been i xeluded from the grounds and the only wire at the track will be- a telegraph wire serving outside poolrooms. Of the riders who have had the honor of piloting Kings Plate winners in past years there were on hand to see this years race at Woodbine: Aliie Gates, three times successful: Charlie Wise. Charlie Phair. Charlie Butler. It. J. Mason. "Kelly" Phillips and Jimmy Foley. The last-named is the only oic :ill in the saddle. William P. Burch. a well-known trainer of the old school, won his maiden race as manager of the southern division of the Chelae* Stable string when Spanish Prince scored at Jamestown the oilier day. Mr. Burch is not training himself. M. P. Kelly attends to the heavy work of his stable. Mr. Burch. who has accumulated a fair share of this worlds goods, has tried several times to quit the turf. But Mr. Puroli has bee* a horseman ever since lie doffed the butternut uniform of a confederate cavalryman in 1865. and lie does not seem aide to break away.
