THE JOCKEY CLUBS COMMENDABLE COURSE. "Persons who have insisted that race tracks are run in New York state for gain exclusively are in some confusion just now because of the willingness of the turf solons to provide extra racing days for the benefit of horse owners," says the Sun. "In spite i.r the fact that the snort at Belmont Park depends wholly on the money taken in at the gates, the first five days of the present meeting have netted a Miiall profit. If the weather had been pleasant last Saturday there doubtless would have been a paying attendance, but as it was the Westchester Racing Association lost a snug sum. which was made up by the inonev taken in ulx.ve expenses on the previous days. The argument that racing is held to further the breeding industry has Wen generally ridiculed, but the fact remains that by scheduling extra days the associations are looking after the interests of horsemen who keep the breeding es tabliriiments alive.
