ANOTHER NEWCOMER IN EASTERN RACING. New York. July 7. W. E. D. Stokes, who paid ,100 for The Spy II.. a brown colt by Disguise Semper Paratus, at the Sheepshead Bay yearling sales on Monday, is the proprietor of the Ansonia Hotel in New York and of the Patchen Wilkes Stock Farm in Fayette County, Kentucky, at which the famous trotting stallions, Peter the Great 2:071. V. Crystallion 2:14 and Patchen Wilkes 2:291, are standing. Stokes, now carrying the colors of Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., in Frencn steeplechase races, was named for him. Mr. Stokes purchase of The Spy II. represents his entry into the ranks of thoroughbred owners. Mr. Stokes also tried to buy Katonah, the Hamburg Spindrift colt which James It. Keene acquired at ,100. - John E. Madden, who is a friend and neighbor of Mr. Stokes, offered Mr. Keene a profit for Katonah on behalf of the purchaser of The Spy II., but Mr. Keene would not sell. Some time ago Mr. Stokes, who is a great believer in the potency of thoroughbred blood, announced that he Intended to infuse some of it into bis trotting stock. Mr. Stokes bought The Spy II. to race, however. He will buy other youngsters later on. Some two weeks ago Mr. Stokes bought the thoroughbred broodmare, Laodice. in foal to Ogden, from Mr. Maddeu. His young horses will be entered in the Epsom Derby and Grand Prix, and if they show good quality in this country, will be sent abroad to till such engagements as may be made for them. A thorough horseman himself, he will not engage a trainer until he sees what he has to train.
