ADVANCE TO FITZ HERBERT HILDRETHS GREAT THREE-YEAR-OLD EASILY BEATS KEENES CRACK HILARIOUS. Payette, Remaining Starter, Never a Dangerous Contender Fleet Filly, Julia Powel, Is Destroyed as Result of Accident, r New York, July S. Fitz Herbert simply toyed with Hilarious In the Advance Stakes, of one mile mid live-sixteenths, at Sheepshead I5ay today. Of the three nominations made overnight ElTendi was withdrawn and Fayette was lidded. This change failed to affect the anticipated outcome. Fayette ran forwardly in the early running, but was never a really dangerous factor. Something akin to the interest aroused by the famous struggles for supremacy between turf champions of the past, as in the ease of the Domino-Dobbins duel, the Miss Woodford -Frecland contest and the Henry of Nsivarre-Domino dead heat, prevailed today, and approximately 15.000 racing enthusiasts journeyed to the beautiful Coney Island Jockey Club course in anticipation of the opportunity to acclaim the three-year-old champion of the season. Each of the mighty pair. Fitz Herbert and Hilarious, stripped with an unbeaten stake winning record to his credit this year, and neither liad yet been well measured In a race. Therefore, opinions as to their respective merits were fairly evenly divided. The son of Ethelbert became ths dominant factor in the running from the outset and quickly dissipated all doubt as to his overwhelming superiority. Retarded for a few strides. Fitz Herbert speedily drew out on the inside and proceeded to force a marvelously fast pace for a race of this character. The first quarter was run In 23Js seconds, the first three-eighths in SH, the half mile in 40.4 and the three-quarters ire 1:11 j. All the while Fitz Herbert steadily drew away from his badly staggering opponents. The closing half of the journey was a procession, with the leader pulling un and Hilarious and Fayette respectively second and third, excessively and unnecessarily urged on in unavailing TMirsult. The last quarter of the race was covered In comparatively slow time and tended to show how completely and hopelessly beaten the Keene and Madden horses were. James It. Keene carefully looked Fitz Herbert over before the race and afterward watched his cooling out with enhanced interest. He congratulated S. C. Hildreth on owning so great a race horse and so perfect a specimen of the thoroughbred. Trainer James Rowe said: "Hilarious Is a nice horse, but he has no business with racers of Fitz Herberts caliber and I will be glad to let well enough alone from now on. Hereafter Hilarious will not oppose Fitz Herbert in any stakes.v He certainly will not start in the Lawrence Realization. Fitz Herbert has the most perfect action of any horse I ever saw and he is undoubtedly a very great race horse." Nearly everybody coincides with Mr. Rowe in this. Like this years Suburban, no race was ever won with more impressiveness than the Advance. This was an afternoon of first-class sport, ideal weather and track conditions being important contributory factors. The racing furnished plenty of incident. Julia Powel. odds-on favorite for the first race, fell while running prominently on the far turn and was injured so badly that she had to be destroyed. Jockey Butwell, who was riding, escaped with a few minor bruises. The stewards investigated the accident and there was a long delay before the placings were olliciallv confirmed. Crowley, who rode Lilvpad. was adjudged guilty of rough riding and was suspended for the meeting. It was only about a fortnight ago that J. E. Gaff-Jiey purchased Julia Powel from W. B. Jennings for ,500. The day following her purchase she carried to victory the colors of her new owner, who la a recent recruit to the ranks of eastern owners. In her two-year-old form she ran several excellent races, the winniug of the Kpinaway Stakes at Saratoga being her most notable achievement. Here is the record of the fillys racing career: Julia Powel. ch. f. 1905. by Watercress Cottage Girl. Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Maltbie. Evening Song and Live Wire were short-priced horses that ran below expectations. August Belmont. Jr.. was elected a member of the Jockey Club this afternoon. Cable advices from Germany bring the unwelcome news that James H. McCormick, the noted American trainer, is dying of pneumonia. iandurlew and ONeill haYe not dissolved their partnership, reports to the contrary notwithstanding.
