MORE RAIN AT FORT ERIE YESTERDAYS GOING OF THE SORT CALLING FOR RACERS OF STURDY TYPE. All Red Takes Centre Shots Measure in Handicap Feature of Card Cannie Maid Makes Dis--appointing Showing at Short Odds., Buffalo. N. . July 13. Track conditions today were made worse than yesterday by heavy rain that fell during the night and it required a sturdy racer to run successfully in the trying going. Form was at a discount and most of the choices were bowled over, enabling the bookmakers to partially rettieve previous losses. The handicap at a mile and seventy vards. which featured the card, resulted ill defeat for Centre Shot, which, despite her heavy impost, was considered to hold the race safe, and was consequently made an overwhelming choice. Only four started in the race and It became a duel between AH Red and Centre Shot from the start. The Cella colt, 113- virtue of his light weight, drew away into the lead after going seven furlongs and won with ease. Centre Shot was much the best of the others and beat them off. Todays attendance did not fall far short of the record and interest in the racing was keen. Cannie Maids defeat in the second race by Caper Sauce was one of the principal surprises 6f the afternoon. Cannie Maid was looked upon as one of the likeliest winners of the card. She encouraged her backers by going well for a- half, apparently holding Caper Sauce Safe, but when it Came to the real test. Caper Sauce drew away to win by a good margin. In the opener, which was for maiden fillies. Olivia Miehle, the favorite, was handily lieatcn by William Garths Western Lady, which received considerable smart siiiort. I. T. Chinii took down another purse when Greit Heavens made a show of his opposition in the fifth race. Floreal wns thought to have, an extra good chance to beat Great Ileaveusf, Imt weak handling accornted for her failure to- make the expected showing. In the "three-quarters mile sprint for platers Sir Edward m-.ide a runaway race- of It.- leading from the start and winning as bis rider pleased. Paul Rulnart.- an outsider, finished in advance of Cloister-ess for second money. A jam soon after the start served to eliminate Ragman. Tom Holland and Thomas Calhoun, the three choices; from serious contention. Flora Riloy and Lawyer Millar were. the. beaten favorites in the last two races., Doth succunilKMl. easily to Rosoboro and King of Mist, respectively. The latter was bid up to SWTt from an entered prleo of 00 by Guy Gray, but his owner retained him. Carruthers and Phelaii!.s string ,of racers were shipped today to Montreal, where they will oc rested until the fall meeting at Blue Ilomiets. E. Rathmanhas irarchased from William Garth the two-year-old, lulka. William Wlalkcr has decided to shin a division of his stable to the Empire City track. In the lot that will go east will be, Stanley Fay and Bellwether. Hugh Penny this morning purchased the useful racer. King Avondale, for a reported price of 00. William Garth, who purchased fourteen yearlings at the recent New York sales, .will send the consign ment to" his farm in Charlottesville. Va., where they will be broken and tried. -Mr. Garth intends to purchase twelve more. He will try out thtj youngsters in tlie fall and plans to retain the best and dispose of the others. Pat Dunnes Ketchemlke sustained an Injury in his race of yesterday that caused him to fall lame; It will le a considerable time before he is again a starter. ;
