MADDEN ADMIRES HILDRETHS METHODS. New York, July 13. The present-day success of S. C. Hildreth on the American turf is due in a measure to his business relations with John E. Madden. They were bitter enemies years agovind indulged in a physical encounter which resulted in Hildreths withdrawal from the eastern turf. . Hildreth was in disfavor until, E. E. Smathers purchased a big stable several years ago and secured a trainers license for him. Hildreth and Madden then became warm friends and have been like brothers ever since. Madden sold Uncle to Hildreth two years ago for .0,000. but the colt unfortunately went wrong. Then Madden sold King James and Joe Madden to Hildreth for about 5,000 and also joined the latter in the purchase of Fitz Herbert from II. H. Brandt for 8,000. These transactions enabled Hildreth to come to the front. Madden has always had a high opinion of Hildreth as an expert trainer and once said that he would rather sell his horses to the owner of Fitz Herbert than to anybody else.
