HOW FITZ HERBERT CAME TO BE BEATEN. New York. July 13. It is- universally conceded that Fitz Herbert is one of the greatest three-year-olds we have seen in many years that he is as good as Colin. Ballot, Gold Heels, Peter Pan. Hermis. The Paradcr and Commando were in their years. There are some who maintain that Fitz Herbert was only a second-class two-year-old. because he was beaten last fall by such second-raters as Trance, Suffragette, Selectman and Joe Madden. S. Q. Hildreth maintains that Fitz Herbert: was always a first-class horse and his explanation of the Etlielbert colts defeats last fall by second-raters is edifying. At Saratoga last July Fitz Herbert worked as cleverly as any two-year-old that was seen in the Futurity, and Hildreth is confident that he would have beaten Maskette, Helmet and Sir Martin if .he had got to the post In condition to do his best. He did not .start because a short time lefore the great two-year-"old race was run a ferrier in plating him pricked his foot and a running sore resulted. This accident necessitated his temporary retirement from training and not only prevented his starting in the Futurity but made it impossible for Hildreth to restore hun to his earlier condition during the remainder of the season.
