MORE RACERS REACH CHURCHILL DOWNS. Derby Candidates Training in Kentucky Work Over Louisville Course in Preparation for Big Race. Louisville, Ky.. April S. The track at Churchill Downs today had dried out sufficiently for some fairly gool work, the fastest of which was a quarter in 24? by two Alvescot two-year-olds iu the stable of George J. Long. So far the best work of the locally trained Kentucky Derby candidates lias been a mile in 1:40 by Silver Brush, three-quarters in 1:171! by Sir Dawn and three-quarters in 1:21 by Exemplar. The latter worked seven-eighths this morning, hard held, in l::!5i. Ho is George J. Longs Derby candidate, while Sir Dawn is in the stable of C. C. Van Meter. Silver Brush is R. Colstons Derby hope. W. C. Westmoreland, former trainer for F. J. Pons, arrived from Florida with his string. He bought from Mr. Pons Abrasion, Ben Double, Rose-horo and Oakley, and he also has Bodega and Lillian E. in his string. The Pons string of twenty horses also arrived iu good condition from Florida in charge of George Walker and is quartered at Douglas Park. T. Abadie brought six head from Jacksonville, including Ben Howe, Fnlcada, Allendale Queen and Tom King. George Land Is at the Downs with six horses that he raced in Florida, they being Archduke, Wise Mason. Royal Report, Coletter and Louisville Lady. All shipped well. Neal Einight reached the Downs with the string owned jointly by him and Wayne .loplin. The mare, Elizabethan, which was sick when taken oft the cars, is out of danger. Jockey T. Koerner came witli Mr. Enright, while Mr. Joplin remained in Florida to enjoy a short fishing trip. T. Hatfield shipped his string of horses from Jacksonville to Jamestown, but will remain in that section only until the Jamestown meeting closes, and all his horses will be at Churchill Downs by Derby day, May V,. He has jockey Wingfield under contract. The racing string of Woodford Clay lias arrived from the blue grass region and is quartered at Douglas Park. Ocean Bound is in grand condition, having wintered well. Mr. Clay had a talk with George Odom today over the prospective meeting here of Ocean Bound and Follie Levy. Another big stable at Douglas Park that the work watchers are tabbing is that ot J. B. Respess, in which is Wintergreen, winner of the Kentucky Derby- of -190!, and -the much-discussed three-year-old. Lottery Man. The Respess string was shipped from Latonia and a farm near Covington. All look well, although some of the juveniles have not been in training for long.
