TRACK CONDITIONS CHANGE MUD RUNNERS AFFORDED ANOTHER CHANCE AT JAMESTOWN TRACK. . Plato Glass An Easy Winner in Feature Contest McCahey Showing Superiority in Saddle An. other Test of Virginia Law in Prospect. Norfolk, Va, April S. Despite disagreeable weather a large crowd turned out at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs cTurse this afternoon. The going was deep and heavy, following rain which fell early in the -day, and -the change in track conditions resulted in many withdrawals. The public hail a good lino on the mud runners, as the afternoons results showed three favorites and two well-hacked second choices successful. Eighteen layers were on hand and speculation was keen. The feature race, a handicap at one mile and a sixteenth, resulted in an easy victory for Plate Glass, which won in a romp by three lengths after being all but left at the post. There was heavy support for the horse and he went to the post at odds-on. The Nigger was withdrawn, owing to the bad going, which he does not fancy too well. McCahey is the real thing in the jockey line here. He scored with three of his mounts during the afternoon. In the fifth race he figured! in an .excellent finish on Rye Straw, which beat the fast-closing Frank Purcell a head. Incidentally, it was Rye Straws third successive victory. He had to be much the best to win today, as he stumbled and. went to his knees at. tbo start. Joe Rose lost a purse that ho should have von when he bolted to the outside fence entering the homestretch. He was leading by a couple of lengths at the time when he took the notion to run out. Bell was unable to straighten him and he did not stop until he was close to the outer rail. Only two of the four that went to the post in the steeplechase finished without mishap. Black Bridgo unseated his rider at the eighth jump and Merry .Man also lost his jockey at the same fence. The latter was caught anil remounted and finished -the course in time to get third money. St. Abe, making his first effort here through the field, jumped well and showed good speed. Ho was on even terms with Black Bridge when the latter came to grief and It looks as if ho will develop into a fair steeplechaser. Judge Lawless of Norfolk County- was requested today by Governor Mann to appoint a new justice of the peace with special designation for still another test or the legality of the laying of odds as practiced on the Jamestown Jockey Clubs track. Ono of three incumbent magistrates of the district in which the race track is located has twice held that the betting as carried on at Jamestown is not iu violation of the Virginia lav.
